Monsters Snap Griffins' Historic Streak with 3-2 Win
December 27, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - In front of 10,157 fans at The Q, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters ground the Grand Rapids Griffins' 15-game winning streak, tied for the third-longest such streak in AHL history, to a halt on Sunday by a final score of 3-2. With the win, the Monsters snapped a four-game winless streak and at 16-9-2-2 overall this season and with a .621 points percentage, remain alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Daniel Zaar's team-leading ninth of the season gifted Lake Erie a 1-0 lead at 6:04 of the opening period, thanks to visionary feeds from Josh Anderson and Michael Chaput. Jamie Sifers pushed the Monsters' edge to 2-0 with a center point blast at 14:36 of the first with T.J. Tynan registering an assist on the play.
In the second, Martin Frk put Grand Rapids on the board at 9:42, but a point-blank Joe Devin finish just 1:16 into the final stanza, set up by Kerby Rychel, staked the Monsters to a 3-1 advantage. With the Griffins' net empty and time winding down in the third, Colin Campbell tipped home a Nathan Paetsch shot at 17:36 to draw Grand Rapids within a goal, but the Monsters hung tough and emerged 3-2 winners.
The Griffins' loss, their first since a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Monsters in Cleveland on November 14th, ended Grand Rapids' longest winning streak in franchise history. Jared Coreau took the loss in net for the Griffins despite making 22 saves while Lake Erie starter Anton Forsberg improved to 11-5-2 in net for the Monsters this year by virtue of a 22-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Tuesday home clash vs. the Toronto Marlies with full coverage underway from The Q at 7:00 pm on AM 1420 The Answer and the Monsters Hockey Network.
