San Jose Barracuda News Release
San Jose, CA -The San Jose Barracuda (11-9-2-3, 27pts) presented by Barracuda Networks returned to action after the holiday break with a dominating 5-1 victory over the visiting Stockton Heat (9-13-0-2, 20pts) in front of 3,985 fans at the SAP Center on Sunday afternoon. The Barracuda continue their four game home stand on Monday, Dec 28 at 1:15pm vs. the Charlotte Checkers.
Barclay Goodrow (2-0-2), Petter Emanuelsson (1-1-2), Trevor Parkes (1-0-1), and Bryan Lerg (1-0-1) all scored for the Barracuda in the 5-1 win while Troy Grosenick made 31 saves on 32 shots as San Jose moved two games over .500 for the first time this season. Derek Grant (1-0-1) scored the lone goal for the Heat with Joni Ortio making 21 saves on 25 shots, and was replaced by Kent Simpson who made 9 saves on 10 shots as the Barracuda extended their point streak to four games (2-0-2-0).
The Barracuda came out strong looking poised, fast and aggressive after the holiday break. San Jose lit the lamp first at 7:49 on a smooth pass from the right of the net that was redirected in by Trevor Parkes (4th) who was camped out at the top of the crease. The Barracuda increased their lead two minutes later when a shot from the point was deflected in front, saved by Heat goaltender Joni Ortio and then slapped in on the second chance opportunity by Petter Emanuelsson (5th). Troy Grosenick was stellar in net for the Barracuda saving all 10 shots he faced in the period. San Jose went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead through the first period with shots in favor of San Jose 14 to 10.
San Jose continued their impressive play into the second period scoring on the power play when a shot from the point yielded a juicy rebound which lead to a flurry of players poking at the loose puck with Bryan Lerg (7th) eventually sliding it under Ortio and into the back of the net at 5:41. Barclay Goodrow (10th) received a lateral pass while rushing into the zone, made a move to his left then fired home a wrister beating Ortio five-hole to put the Barracuda up 4-0 at 11:48. Ortio was then replaced by backup goaltender Kent Simpson for Stockton. The Heat got their only goal on the power play when Derek Grant (11th) slapped home a rebound after Grosenick made the initial save on the shot from the point. Alex Gallant (3rd FM) and Ryan Lomberg (1st FM) dropped the gloves at 12:41 in a good scrap as the physical play picked up. After the second period the Barracuda lead 4-1. Shots were in 15 to 10 in favor of the Barracuda in the second.
Goodrow (11th) got his second goal of the night at 3:11 beating Simpson to a loose puck in front of the crease and putting it home in the vacant net giving San Jose the 5-1 lead. Greger Hanson (1st FM) and Ryan Lomberg (2nd FM) engaged in fisticuffs at 12:07 as frustration for the Heat continued. Troy Grosenick held strong through the final period saving all 12 shots to secure the win for the Barracuda. Shots were 12 to 6 in favor of Stockton as San Jose improved to .500 on home ice this season.
