Bonifacio Blasts Chasers Past Sounds 5-2
May 3, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Omaha starter Heath Fillmyer fanned eight over six quality innings and relievers Kyle Zimmer and Kevin McCarthy provided three hitless frames of support, while right fielder Jorge Bonifacio blasted a go-ahead three run home run in the seventh to lift the Storm Chasers to a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over the Nashville Sounds on Thursday night at First Tennessee Park.
Fillmyer and Sounds starter Seth Maness dueled over six frames each, though Nashville scored single tallies in the first and sixth frames to gain the 2-0 edge entering the seventh. Omaha, however, broke through in the seventh when Bonifacio blasted a three-run shot to left, his third longball of 2019, to push the Storm Chasers ahead 4-2. 1B Frank Schwindel added a solo homer in the ninth to put an exclamation mark on Omaha's scoring.
Schwindel (2-4, 2 R, HR, RBI) and 1B Cheslor Cuthbert (2-4, R, 2B, RBI) each collected two knocks in the victory, while Sounds LF Willie Calhoun and SS Eli White each tallied a knock, the only hits to Nashville's name. Omaha SS Nicky Lopez , meanwhile, failed to record a hit in four plate appearances, snapping his eight-game hit streak.
Fillmyer (6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K) earned his first victory of the year, retiring 16 of the final 18 batters he faced. His only blemishes in that period came against Calhoun, who drew a walk in the third and crushed a solo homer in the sixth. Maness (6.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 4 K) was excellent through six frames, yielding a lone hit allowing hits to the four batters he faced in the seventh, capped by Bonifacio's blast. Zimmer (1.2 IP, BB, K) and McCarthy (1.1 IP, 2 K) joined forces for the final three innings to silence the Sounds, with the former receiving his second hold and the latter notching his first save.
After taking three of four in Nashville, the Storm Chasers return to Werner Park on Friday evening to start an eight-game homestand, beginning with a four-game series versus the Iowa Cubs. First pitch of the series opener is slated for 7:05pm CT. RHP Scott Blewett (2-1, 5.16) is expected to get the nod for Omaha, with former Storm Chasers southpaw Mike Montgomery anticipated to start for Iowa as part of a Major League Rehab Assignment.
Tickets for that game and all remaining Storm Chasers home contests can be purchased online at www.omahastormchasers.com, or by calling the Werner Park Ticket Office from noon until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at (402) 738-5100.
