Bisons One-Hit in 3-2 Loss to RailRiders

May 27, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Due to dominant pitching performances from both teams Thursday night, a three-run home run was all the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders needed to defeat the Buffalo Bisons 3-2.

After finishing up the final six innings of Wednesday's postponed game, Bisons' manager Casey Candaele elected to ride the strength of his bullpen who leads the Triple-A East league in relievers ERA with a 2.54 combined average for game two of the doubleheader. Candaele started righty reliever Casey Lawrence for the first time this season.

The RailRiders chose to use a regularly scheduled starter opposite Lawrence pitching Brian Keller for the fourth time this season.

Both strategies struggled early as Christian Colon hit his team-leading fifth long-ball of the year off Keller. The RailRiders' Socrates Brito immediately countered with a 3-run home run off Lawrence to right to give the RailRiders a 3-1 after the first inning.

After the homerun Keller was sharp pitching four innings and giving up only two runs on one hit and five walks for the game.

The RailRiders Sal Romano and Nick Goody followed Keller and continued to stall the Bisons' offense allowing no-hits over the final four innings and striking out four to allow for Romano to earn the win.

Despite earning the loss, Lawrence settled in after the homerun striking out four of the last seven batters he faced. He finished the game pitching three innings, struck out six and gave up three runs on a trio of hits.

The remaining relievers were sharp for the Bisons. C.J. Edwards, Hobie Harris and Kirby Snead combined to pitch three shutout innings, allowed no hits or walks and struck out five to keep the Bisons in the game.

The Bisons tacked on a second run in the fourth inning after Tyler Smith walked home Breyvic Valera to cut the lead to 3-2. However, Buffalo's offense was unable to make up the difference finishing the game with only one hit as a team.

With the loss, the Bisons dropped both games in the doubleheader and fall to 12-9 on the season, three games back of the RailRiders (15-6) for first in the Triple-A East Northeast division.

The Bisons and RailRiders will meet up again Friday at PNC Field for game four with Buffalo looking to even the series at two games each.

The Bisons are expected to start right Nick Allgeyer against the RailRiders' righty Deivi Garcia. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
