Five-Run 3rd inning downs IronPigs

(Allentown, PA) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (13-8) dropped their first game against the Worcester Red Sox (12-9) on Thursday evening as they lost 9-2. The IronPigs three-game winning streak ended.

The IronPigs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Ryan Cordell hit an RBI single against Ryan Weber (1-1) to score Cornelius Randolph. Worcester was able to take a 5-1 lead against Adonis Medina (3-1) in the top of the fifth inning.

The first run came when Jett Bandy scored on a fielding error by Ruben Tejada. Marcus Wilson followed with an RBI single that scored Jonathan Arauz. Cesar Puello singled in two runs to give the Woo Sox a 4-1 lead. Michael Gettys brought in the final run when he singled in Wilson.

Medina was done after 2 2/3 innings as he allowed five runs (one earned) off five hits and two walks with one strikeout. Mickey Moniak homered against Weber in the bottom of the third inning to cut Worcester's lead to 5-2. The home run for Moniak was his third of the season.

Ethan Evanko tossed two scoreless innings in relief that was followed up by David Paulino's 2 1/3 scoreless innings. The Woo Sox extended their lead to 8-1 in the top of the eighth inning when Yairo Munoz grounded into a force out that scored a run and Wilson hitting a two-run double. All runs came against Mauricio Llovera.

Jack Conley pitched the top of the ninth inning and allowed a run as Jett Bandy scored on an RBI groundout by Munoz. Kevin McCarthy closed out the game for Worcester by retiring the side in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The IronPigs and Worcester Red Sox play at 7:05 p.m. on Friday evening at Coca-Cola Park.
