Bisons Fall 6-4 to the Visiting Mets

June 3, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

After walking off to win their game Tuesday night, the Bisons didn't have any of that magic left for the late stages of Wednesday night's game. The club fell to the visiting Syracuse Mets, 6-4, from Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

The two teams were tied for the majority of the game, but the Mets retook the lead in the top of the 7th. With Drew Ferguson on second base and two outs, David Thompson homered to left field, giving the rival club a 6-4 lead with just three at-bats left for the Herd.

From the bottom of the 5th to the bottom of the 8th, the Bisons' batters were held to just two hits and three baserunners. The club also struck out four times and popped out three times to the infield over that same span.

The Herd had one last shot in the bottom of the 9th. Richard Urena, who homered earlier in the game, doubled with two outs. Urena's double brought the tying run to the plate, in Christian Colon. The veteran battled deep into the count and lined a hard-hit ball out to right field, but unfortunately for the Herd, it was hit right at the Mets' outfielder for the final out of the game.

Despite not being able to rally late in the game, the Bisons responded well to playing from behind throughout the early stages of the game.

The Mets jumped ahead of the Herd in the top of the 2nd inning. Patrick Mazeika doubled to lead off the inning and worked his way to third after a sacrifice fly. Khalil Lee then hit a double of his own to left field, scoring Mazieka and giving the Mets' a 1-0 lead.

The Bisons responded quickly, scoring in the bottom of the 2nd. Forrest Wall led the inning off with a single and was able to work his way to third base after stealing second and third on consecutive at-bats. Juan Graterol then grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Wall and tying the game at one.

Graterol, who has played in just eleven games this season, batted in his eighth run on the year, tying him for fourth on the Herd in that category with Logan Warmoth.

With the game tied at one, Orlando Calixte stepped to the plate for the Mets in the top of the 4th. Calixte hit a bases-clearing double, scoring three runs for the rival club, giving them a 4-1 lead over the Bisons.

The Herd immediately responded in the bottom of the inning again. With two outs and runners on the corners, Richard Urena homered off of the right-field foul pole, tying the game at four. The veteran's three-run shot was his second home run of the year.

Anthony Kay, who was traded from the Mets to the Blue Jays in 2019, started on the mound for the Bisons after being sent to Triple-A on a rehab assignment. Pitching against his former club, Kay allowed four runs on four hits through 3.1 innings and walked three batters.

Although the starter didn't get the best of the Mets, Kay was able to strike out six batters during his time on the mound. The Herd's pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts in the game.

With three stolen bases in this one, Forrest Wall is now tied for the league lead in stolen bases with eleven on the season. Wall wasn't just a problem on the base paths for the Mets, he was also a problem at the plate. The young speedster went 2-for-3 and also walked once, reaching base in 3 of his 4 plate appearances. Wall also scored two of the Herd's four runs on the night.

The Bisons (13-11) and Mets (9-17) will go back at it Thursday night as they both look to take the advantage in the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. The Blue Jays top prospect, Nate Pearson, is projected to start on the mound for the Herd.
