Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (9-9) plated five runs in the second inning and held the Savannah Sand Gnats (7-10) scoreless after the fourth inning to win game one 7-3 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Monday night. The Shorebirds have won a season high four straight games. The 'Birds have scored five or more runs in 11 straight games.
Steve Bumbry paced the Shorebirds offense with three hits in his return to Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds jumped on Savannah starter Ryan Fraser in the first inning. Bumbry, who was transferred from Frederick today, hit a solo home run over the left field wall on 3-1 pitch to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead.
The Shorebirds built a sizeable lead in the second. Michael Ohlman started the inning with a single up the middle. Mychal Givens followed with a walk. Then, Brenden Webb lined a single up the middle to score Ohlman. Then, Bumbry hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield to give the Shorebirds a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Manny Machado blasted a three-run homer over the left-center field wall to give the 'Birds a 6-0 lead.
The Sand Gnats cut in the deficit by way of the long ball. In the third, Rafael Fernandez hit a two-run homer and in the fourth, Aderlin Rodriguez hit a solo homer to cut the Shorebirds lead to 6-3.
The Shorebirds tacked on one more in the seventh inning on a miscue by right fielder Javier Rodriguez. With Steve Bumbry at first, Machado hit a grounder into right field. With Bumbry running to third, Rodriguez tried to throw behind Machado at first but threw low and wide of Sam Honeck, allowing Bumbry to score.
Tim Adleman controlled the Sand Gnats all night long. In a season high seven innings, he allowed just six hits and three runs. Adleman struck out five and did not walk a batter. Jason Gurka tossed two scoreless innings in relief to close out the Sand Gnats.
Adleman is the third Shorebirds starter to finish the seventh inning this season.
The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats play game two of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jacob Pettit is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
