PREVIEW:
After an off day on Sunday, the Shorebirds gear up for their first home game since April 14. The Shorebirds completed a nine-game homestand with a 6-1 win on Saturday in Augusta, Georgia. The current three-game winning streak is the longest of the 2011 season. The Shorebirds went 3-5 during their first homestand of the season from April 7-14.
FOURTH IN THE LEAGUE:
Kipp Schutz ranks fourth in the South Atlantic League with a .386 batting average. Bryce Massanari of Asheville leads the circuit with a .421 average. Schutz will put a seven-game hit streak on the line in game one against Savannah. He leads the Shorebirds with seven multi-hit games on the season.
SECOND IN WALKS:
The Shorebirds rank second in the league with 74 walks on the season (4.35 per game). Hagerstown leads the SAL with 76 walks. Six Shorebirds have walked more than seven times (Manny Machado - 10, Trent Mummey - 10, Brenden Webb - 9, Kieron Pope - 8, Jonathan Schoop - 8 and Kipp Schutz - 7).
SECOND BEST IN MiLB:
Scott Copeland has the second best GO/AO (ground ball to air out) ratio in all of Minor League Baseball (5.67). Only Orangel Arenas of the Arkansas Travelers (AA) has a better ratio (6.80). On 4/21, 11 of the 12 outs recorded were on the ground.
BALANCED RUN PRODUCTION:
Six Shorebirds players have six or more RBIs through the first 17 games. Kipp Schutz leads the club with 15. Mummey and Pope are tied for second with 12 each.
OFFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT:
The Shorebirds have scored 94 runs in 17 games this season (5.52). Through 40 games in April last season, they scored only 114 runs (2.85 per game).
BUMBRY RETURNS:
Steve Bumbry was transferred from Frederick to Delmarva while Trent Mummey was promoted to Frederick today. Through 14 games, Mummey was batting .291 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Meanwhile, Bumbry was hitting .111 with the Frederick Keys. Last season, Bumbry played in 105 games for the Delmarva Shorebirds. He batted .263 with four home runs and 34 RBIs.
FIVE OR MORE:
The Shorebirds have scored five or more runs in ten straight games. The last time the Shorebirds scored under five runs was on AprTHROW ¬ËEM OUT: Justin Dalles threw out 3-of-4 base stealers in the last game against Augusta. Coming into the game, the combo of Dalles and Michael Ohlman had only thrown out three runners in the first 16 games. The duo are 6-of-42 on the season catching runners (14.3%).
BIG INNINGS:
The Shorebirds have scored three or more runs in a single inning in four straight games. They scored four runs in the eighth inning on Saturday in Augusta. They scored three in the seventh the night prior.
GOOD START VS. LEFTIES:
The Shorebirds are off to a good start this season batting against left-handed arms. They are 23-of-65 (.354) against lefty pitching. The Shorebirds are batting .249 against right-handed pitching (129-of-519). Jonathan Schoop is 6-of-10 against lefties (.600).
LONG GAMES:
The Shorebirds have played seven straight games over 2 hours and 40 minutes. Five of the seven were over 2:50 and three of the seven were over three hours. il 13 when they scored three against Kannapolis.
FLACCO IMPROVING:
Flacco is riding a four-game hitting into game one against Savannah. Flacco has five runs, four RBIs and three walks over the last four games. Flacco started the season with just three hits and one RBI in his first four games.
