Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds scored five times in the second inning on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats Monday night at Arthur Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD in the first game of a nine-game Savannah road trip. Since reaching the .500 mark, the Gnats have lost three games in a row.
Down 6-0 after two innings, the Gnats (7-10) fought back with the long ball. CF Rafael Fernandez lifted a two-run home run in the third inning to make it 6-2. Aderlin Rodriguez's second home run in as many games brought the Gnats within three at 6-3. Rodriguez, who homered Saturday night, became the first Gnat to hit homeruns in back-to-back games in 2011.
After Rodriguez's fourth-inning home run, only one Gnat reached base: 2B Wilfredo Tovar, who singled twice. Tovar has hit safely in four straight games going 8-for-12 (.740) with two doubles, raising his season batting line to .278/.339/.370 (AVG/OBP/SLG).
The Shorebirds (9-9) used a pair of home runs of their own to build a 6-0 lead. CF Steven Bumbry hit a solo home run in the first, and SS Manny Machado smacked a three-run home run off Gnats starter Ryan Fraser in the second inning. The 18-year old Machado was the Orioles first round pick (#3 overall) in the 2010 draft.
Savannah will send RHP Yohan Almonte (2-1, 3.50) to the hill Tuesday night against LHP Jacob Pettit (2-0, 3.12) for Delmarva. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The radio broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 7 pm.
