Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today that outfielder Ben Gamel has been assigned to Indianapolis to begin a rehab assignment today vs. the Memphis Redbirds at Victory Field. He will be the 10th major league rehabber to appear with the Indians this season, following infielders Josh VanMeter, Yoshi Tsutsugo and Kevin Newman, outfielder Anthony Alford, and pitchers Heath Hembree, Sam Howard, Max Kranick, Nick Mears and Duane Underwood Jr. VanMeter, Newman, Tsutsugo and Mears are currently on Indy's roster.
Gamel, 30, was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 29 with a left hamstring strain. He appeared in 45 games with Pittsburgh prior to his injury and hit .257 (36-for-140) with 20 runs scored, 11 extra-base hits and 17 RBI. At the time of his injury, he led all Pirates batters in RBI and runs scored.
The left-handed hitter appeared in seven career games at Victory Field in 2015 and '16 with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In those games, he hit .179 (5-for-28) with one extra-base hit and three runs scored.
The Neptune Beach, Fla., native was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh from Cleveland on May 9, 2021.
He was originally signed by New York (AL) in the 10th round (325th overall) of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville, Fla.) High School. He made his major league debut with the Yankees on May 6, 2016 vs. Boston.
Indianapolis' MLB rehab assignments are presented by Franciscan Health.
