BEATING THE HEAT: On a blistering summer afternoon at Victory Field yesterday, Indians pitching dazzled to shut out Memphis, 2-0, in one of their shortest games of the season. The pace of play was led, in large part, by the efficiency of the Indians pitching staff. Osvaldo Bido led the shutout charge and surrendered just one hit over 4.0 scoreless innings. With back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the fifth inning, Joe Jacques induced two groundouts, one turned from third to second by Josh Bissonette to retire a pair and escape a jam. Following the dazzling double play at the hands of the Indians third baseman, Bissonette tallied the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. A Jared Oliva leadoff single and one-out walk set the stage for Bissonette, who roped a double between the 3-4 hole on the right-side of the infield and into the corner to plate a pair. Zach Matson, Hunter Stratton and Austin Brice then combined to hold the shutout through the final four innings, with just three baserunners allowed between the three.

TIME OF GAME: Yesterday's 2:06 game is tied for the Indians' second-shortest nine-inning game and is tied with April 23 vs. Columbus for the shortest nine-inning contest at Victory Field this season. Through 31 home games this season with the new pitch clock rules in effect, nine-inning games at Victory Field take an average of 2:41 to complete. Last season, Indy's 48 nine-inning games at Victory Field averaged 2:55 to complete. No teams in Triple-A are averaging games of over three hours this season, compared to 20 in 2021.

POLISHING GEMS: Yesterday's shutout was Indianapolis' fourth of the season and the first since May 17 vs. Toledo. Two of those four shutouts have come at Victory Field. Aside from the Indians no-hitter on 4/13 at St. Paul, which was started by 7.0 shutout innings by Chase De Jong, Osvaldo Bido has taken the mound to start three of their four shutouts this season. In those outings combined, Bido has surrendered one hit and as many walks walks (9) as strikeouts in 8.2 innings. Only one of Indy's five shutouts a year ago came at home, on Sept. 17 vs. St. Paul.

STARTERS SLING IT: Indians starting pitchers lead all Triple-A teams with a 3.75 ERA (92er/220.2ip) and also have the least amount of innings pitched this season. Indians starting pitchers have the fourth-least innings pitched, behind Single-A Rancho Cucamonga (188.2ip), High-A Great Lakes (219.2ip) and Single-A Columbia (220.0) this season. Following last night's shutout, Indians relievers jumped up from 12th to 11th among all 30 Triple-A teams with a 4.44 ERA (171er/346.2ip).

SWAGGER: Travis Swaggerty has now hit safely in 21 of his last 24 games with a .347 average (33-for-95), 11 extra-base hits and 21 RBI dating back to May 17. In June, he has hit safely in 10 of 11 games, four of which have been multi-hit contests, with a .318 average (14-for-44). In the middle of his hot streak, Swaggerty made his MLB debut with the Pirates and recorded his first big-league hit.

TONIGHT: The Indians will look to build on an early series lead in the six-game series vs. the Memphis Redbirds tonight at 7:05 PM ET at Victory Field. It is just the second regular-season series against the franchise in history, with the Indians going 5-1 vs. Memphis in the Circle City last season. Tonight, Miguel Yajure will make his first career appearance against the Redbirds vs. Thomas Parsons. Parsons made one appearance against the Indians last season and surrendered four runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.

YA-HOO: Miguel Yajure earned his first Triple-A win on Sunday in a bullpen appearance at Gwinnett. He entered in relief of Mike Burrows, who made his Triple-A debut, and surrendered just one run on four hits in 3.2 innings. Yajure has been consistent for the Indians this season, going 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA (4er/11.1ip) and 11 strikeouts in five games (four starts).

BIG GAME: The Pirates announced today that outfielder Ben Gamel will begin a rehab assignment with the Indians tonight at Victory Field. Gamel, 30, was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 29 with a left hamstring strain. He appeared in 45 games with Pittsburgh prior to his injury and hit .257 (36-for-140) with 20 runs scored, 11 extra-base hits and 17 RBI. At the time of his injury, he led all Pirates batters in RBI and runs scored. The left-handed hitter appeared in seven career games at Victory Field in 2015 and '16 with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In those games, he hit .179 (5-for-28) with one extra-base hit and three runs scored.

WELCOME BACK: The Indians announced today that Eric Stout has been activated on their roster after being traded from Chicago (NL) to Pittsburgh yesterday. The southpaw attended Butler University from 2012-14 and compiled an 11-12 record, 5.91 ERA (100er/152.1ip) and 120 strikeouts in 28 games (27 starts) in his sophomore and junior seasons. During his final collegiate campaign, he led the Bulldogs and finished tied for seventh in the BIG EAST Conference with 13 starts. He also ranked fourth in the conference with 64 strikeouts. After being selected by Kansas City in the 13th round (393rd overall) of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, he made his way through the minor league ranks en route to his major league debut with the Royals on April 25, 2018 vs. Milwaukee. He has spent most of the 2022 season with Triple-A Iowa, where he compiled a 2-2 record, 3.94 ERA (13er/29.2ip) and 48 strikeouts in 16 games (one start). Stout has appeared in the Royals, Padres, Reds, Marlins and Cubs organizations in his career before landing with the Pirates.

THIS DATE IN 1997: Tim Belk went 5-for-6 with a double, home run and four RBI as the Indians put up 18 runs on 20 hits in an 18-2 win vs. Iowa. Belk wasn't the only one with a standout performance, as Brian Hunter went 4-for-6 with four RBI of his own and a Victory Field era record three doubles. Future International League Hall of Famer Chad Mottola joined the four-hit club with a home run and two RBI. The Indians pitching staff added to the overall dominance, allowing just two runs with nine strikeouts between starter Giovanni Carrarra and Mike Walker.
