Hershey Bears News Release
Last Week: The BEARS opened the week with a 4-1 loss at Philadelphia at the Wachovia Spectrum. Marek Svatos scored his second goal of the season just 25 seconds into the game to give HERSHEY a 1-0 lead, but the Phantoms would score four unanswered goals to seal the victory. Saturday night, the BEARS returned home and rallied from two different one-goal deficits to defeat the Providence Bruins 4-3 in a shootout at GIANT Center. Jamie Rivers scored his first goal in a HERSHEY uniform in the second period, while Mathieu Darche earned the first three-point game by a BEARS skater this season by scoring two goals and adding an assist. Eric Perrin and Marek Svatos scored goals in the shootout against Bruins goaltender Hannu Toivonen while HERSHEY'S Peter Budaj stopped four of five Providence breakaway attempts to earn the win. Sunday saw the BEARS score twice in the first period and take a 3-2 lead into the third, but HERSHEY fell to Providence 4-3. Budaj took the loss in the game, his fourth in six decisions. Eric Perrin scored two goals while Darche picked up his team leading fifth tally of the season in defeat. The BEARS finished the week 3-6-1-0; good for seventh place in the East Division standings.
Notables: Mathieu Darche is HERSHEY'S nominee for CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week honors for the period ending November 7. Darche enjoyed a four-point week, including three goals and had a hand in every BEARS goal in regulation time Saturday in a 4-3 shootout win over Providence. The former Milwaukee Admiral received some inspiration last week from his former team: he was sent his 2004 Calder Cup Championship ring and highlight video from former BEARS forward and current Milwaukee head coach Claude Noel. Darche's last three-point effort before Saturday night came in Game 2 of the Calder Cup Finals against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The BEARS embark on a five-game road trip Wednesday night in Hartford. The trip ties a season high for longest trip of the season. HERSHEY will also have a five-game journey starting December 1 in Albany. The BEARS outshot Providence 37-34 on Saturday night, which is the only game in the first ten that HERSHEY has outshot its opponent. The BEARS have now lost 14 straight games to Philadelphia after a 4-1 loss Friday night at the Spectrum. HERSHEY last won against Philadelphia at GIANT Center on April 5, 2003. Eric Perrin's two-goal game Sunday against Providence was the first time he notched two in a game since February 13 last season at Albany. The BEARS have drawn 6,860 more fans through six home games this season vs. 2003-04 after a crowd of 10,158 on Sunday.
