Louisville Bats News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - Michael Mariot and Jason Vosler power the Louisville Bats (39-32) past the Columbus Clippers (34-39) in game one of the double-header before coming up short in game two to split Friday night's twin bill at Truist Field.

Louisville got on the board early in game one, scoring two runs in the opening frame. With one out in the inning, Nick Martini reached on a single down the first base line before Christian Encarnacion-Strand drew a walk to set up a bases clearing, two RBI double for Matt Reynolds, his 20th double this season, to put the Bats in front 2-0.

Chuckie Robinson added another run in the second with a solo home run before the offense settled down for three scoreless innings.

The Bats broke the game open in the sixth, putting up five runs in the top of the inning. Louisville sent nine batters to the plate in the inning and racked up four hits and two walks, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Jason Vosler to extend the lead to 8-0. The grand slam marks Vosler's eighth homer of the year, his first grand slam, and the third grand slam of the season for Louisville.

Michael Mariot (3-0, 1.42) was dominant in his third start of the year, turning in 6.0 shutout innings, giving up just three hits while not allowing a walk and striking out two to earn his third win of the season. The effort marks Mariot's second quality start of 2023 and his second in as many starts.

Reds rehabber Tony Santillan (0-1, 9.53) and Ryan Nutof (2-1, 5.97) combined to finish the game and secure the 8-0 shutout victory. The win marks the first shutout victory for the Bats this season and the team's first since one year ago to the day, winning 3-0 over Iowa on June 23, 2022.

The Bats once again got on the board in a hurry in game two. Nick Martini got the game going this time, launching his sixth home run of the year with one away in the opening frame.

Louisville would strike again in the third, scoring two runs on an RBI single into left field off the bat of Encarnacion-Strand to push the lead to 3-0.

Alec Mills (0-0, 4.50) made his first start of the season for the Bats and tossed 4.0 strong innings, shutting out the Knights while only surrendering a single hit with one walk.

Charlotte finally got on the board in fifth, scoring four runs in the inning to take its first lead of the night.

The Knights' lead would hold through a thirty-three-minute rain delay and seventh inning rally attempt to force the twin bill split as the Bats fell 4-3 in game two.

Louisville and Charlotte will continue the six-game series tomorrow night, Saturday, July 24th with game five. First pitch is set for 7:04 pm E.T. as righty Teddy Stankiewicz (1-0, 9.00) will take the bump for the Bats, facing off against southpaw Garrett Davla (1-3, 5.56) for the Knights.
