Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (37-36) mounted a late comeback but fell short in a 7-6 loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (36-35) in front of 8,036 on Friday night at Polar Park.
The WooSox trailed 7-3 through six, but began the bottom of the seventh with a double by Niko Goodrum. After a single, popout and walk, Stephen Scott lined a two-run single up the middle to make it 7-5.
In the eighth, Corey Rosier began the inning with his first Triple-A hit, a single through the left side. A walk took him to a second, a flyout pushed him to third and he scored on a Ronaldo Hernandez sac-fly, cutting the deficit to one.
Nick Sogard reached second on the sac-fly, but the WooSox failed to tie the game in the eighth or ninth, dropping their second in a row to the IronPigs.
Early on, Lehigh Valley opened up a 4-0 lead through two-and-a-half innings, scoring all four in the top of the third off starter Rio Gomez. They plated runs on a Weston Wilson two-run double and a two-run shot by Simon Muzzioti.
Ronaldo Hernandez put Worcester on the board with an RBI single, his 21st RBI in the month of June (second-most in the International League). An inning later, Niko Goodrum lined a two-run shot to right-center to make it a one-run IronPigs lead.
But the IronPigs re-opened their three-run lead, scoring on a Dustin Peterson solo shot and Muzzioti single in the fifth and Peterson RBI single in the sixth.
Those swings made it 7-3, and despite a nine-hit night for Worcester, the IronPigs held on for their second straight win at Polar Park.
The WooSox continue the six-game series at Polar Park on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. On the mound, Jake Faria (2-2, 5.86) faces Bailey Falter (2-0, 5.73). Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage is live at 3:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
