Barons Thwart Lookouts Behind Mitchell's Prodigious Night
July 2, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - Jared Mitchell accounted for 14 total bases Wednesday as the Barons picked up a series victory with a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field.
The game had the early makings of a shootout as the Barons held a 5-4 lead after just three innings. Trayce Thompson's RBI single capped a three-run second inning as the Barons took a quick 3-0 lead. After two Chattanooga runs in the bottom half of the inning cut the lead to one, Josh Richmond clubbed his seventh home run of the season, a two run shot to extend the lead to 5-2.
Barons starter Myles Jaye was unable to hold the lead, allowing six total runs on nine hits over 5.0 IP as the Lookouts took their first lead of the game in the fifth on a two-run double by Bobby Coyle. Jared Mitchell prevented the Lookouts from capitalizing further, throwing out Coyle at third base on the play.
Mitchell's night was just beginning as he single handedly propelled his team to victory with a pair of solo home runs in the late innings. The first came in the sixth, tying the game at 6-6 and knocking starter Andres Santiago from the game. His second came two innings later against reliever Robert Carson (1-1, 2.57), giving the Barons a 7-6 lead and capping a 4-for-5 night that also saw him collect a pair of triples. The last Baron to register two triples in the same game was Rober Valido on May 27, 2008 against Jacksonville.
Rangel Ravelo waited until his final at-bat of the game to extend his SouthernLeague-best hitting streak to 19 games, lacing a base hit to center field in the eighth inning. The streak is tied for the fifth-longest in Barons history.
Relievers Kevin Vance (5-2, 4.66) and Brandon Hardin (S, 3) held the Lookouts hitlessover 4.0 scoreless innings as the Barons improved to 7-6 in the second half and 36-47 overall.
The Barons will look make it four wins in five games against the Lookouts in the series finale tomorrow night as LHP Scott Snodgress (4-6, 4.17) takes the hill against RHP Raydel Sanchez (1-4, 5.36). First pitch is scheduled for 5:15 PM CDT.
