Manchester Monarchs News Release
WORCESTER,MA â Right wing Scott Barney's goal with just 2:43 remaining gave the Manchester Monarchs a 1-1 tie with the Worcester IceCats at the Centrum Centre on Friday night. The tie, witnessed by 3,389 fans, allowed the Monarchs to extend their season-best unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1-0).
Barney's goal, his team-leading sixth, enabled the Monarchs (5-5-1-1, 12 points) to draw even after left wing Sergei Varlamov had given the IceCats (3-5-3-0, 9 points) the lead earlier in the period with his fourth goal.
Barney, who entered the contest with four goals in his last two games, extended his goal streak to three games by scoring with a left circle snap shot. Wing John Tripp and defenseman Joe Rullier assisted on the goal that deflected off the glove of goaltender Reinhard Divis and into the net.
Goaltender Adam Hauser, who entered Friday's game with a personal shutout streak of 120 minutes, saw the streak end at 160:38 when Varlamov finished what defenseman Jon Coleman started, jamming Coleman's rebound through Hauser's pads just 38 seconds into the third period. Coleman and defenseman Mike Stuart shared assists on the play.
The two teams skated through a scoreless opening period that included three Monarchs power plays and two outstanding saves from Divis. With the Monarchs on their first power play of the period, Barney set-up Tripp for a one-timer in front of the Worcester net. Divis, reacting quickly to the pass, stacked the pads as Tripp tried to jam it home with 12:30 remaining.
Tripp and Barney were also involved in a scramble in front of the net as the Monarchs closed the period with a power play. Divis, down in the crease and desperately looking for the loose puck, was also aided by referee Gordon Dwyer, who blew his whistle after losing sight of the puck.
Hauser finished with five opening period saves. His most challenging stop came on left wing Scott Pellerin's short-handed chance eight minutes into the period. Pellerin, a veteran of over 500 NHL games who began the season with the Portland Pirates, signed on with the IceCats on Thursday.
The opening period also featured a heavyweight brawl between left wing Ryan Flinn, listed at 6-foot-5, 248-pounds, and left wing Steve McLaren, listed at 6-foot, 225-pounds. Both Flinn and McLaren exchanged several blows to the head before the officiating crew stepped in.
The Monarchs and the IceCats also failed to score in the middle period, combining for only 12 shots. The Monarchs had two more power play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 advantage for 33 seconds early in the period, but couldn't get anything by Divis, who stopped all seven Monarchs shots in the period.
The IceCats also had a pair of middle period power plays, but failed to score on either chance. The IceCats were limited to just one shot on the two power plays.
The Monarchs host the Portland Pirates on Saturday, November 8 at 7:35 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena as part of T-Shirt Night, with the first 5,000 fans receiving a free Monarchs T-shirt courtesy of Crowely Foods. The Monarchs then close week five of the AHL schedule when they host the Albany River Rats at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday, November 9 at 4:05p.m. The first 3,000 kids 12 and under at Sunday's game will receive a free Monarchs practice jersey courtesy of Jiffy Lube.
NOTES: Goaltender Adam Hauser's shutout streak of 160:38 was the third longest in team history. Former Monarchs goaltender Travis Scott holds the club record for consecutive shutout minutes at 179:02. His streak lasted from December 21 through December 26, 2001. The Los Angeles Kings on Friday assigned center Michael Cammalleri to the Monarchs. Cammalleri, 21, appeared in two games for the Kings this season recording zero points and zero penalty minutes. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, missed the first eight games of the season after suffering an MCL sprain of his left knee during a preseason contest on September 21. Originally selected by the Kings in the second round (49th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Cammalleri has appeared in 30 career NHL games, all with the Kings, and has recorded eight points (5-3=8) with 22 penalty minutes. Cammalleri has also appeared in 14 career games with the Monarchs recording 20 points (5-15=20) and 12 penalty minutes.
