LOOKING AHEAD:
Heshey and Philadelphia tangle at the Wachovia Spectrum on Friday (7:05 ET) in the 100th meeting (including postseason) between the in-state rivals. The Phantoms' 6-2 win at the Giant Center on Nov. 2 snapped a six-game winless streak overall and gave the Flyers' farmhands a 38-37-8 edge in the all-time regular-season series (Philly is also 9-7 in the playoffs against Hershey). Kirby Law is the Phantoms' leading scorer this season after recording four points in the win over the Bears; 1999 AHL Rookie of the Year Shane Willis leads Hershey with 12 points.
Back from a four-game road trip through Texas, Manitoba hosts Chicago for a pair of contests on Friday and Saturday (7:30 CT). The Moose have begun their final season in Winnipeg Arena with just one win in their first six home contests, but they are 7-2-2-2 against the Wolves since the teams joined the AHL in 2001. Seven of Chicago's first 10 games this season have been decided by one goal, including a 4-3 overtime win over the Moose on Oct. 16. Fedor Fedorov continues to lead Manitoba in scoring with 13 points, one off the AHL lead.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton takes on Syracuse in a home-and-home, beginning Friday (7:30 ET) at the War Memorial at Oncenter, where the Crunch are unbeaten (3-0-1) this year. Syracuse enters the weekend atop the North Division behind the play of Pascal Leclaire, who struggled as a rookie last year but owns a sterling .938 save percentage so far in 2003-04. Penguins Tom Kostopoulos (13 points) and Tomas Surovy (12 points) are among the league's scoring leaders entering the fifth weekend of the season. The Crunch lead the AHL in power play efficiency with 14 goals in 55 chances (25.5 percent).
Rochester takes a trip to Ohio for games in Cincinnati on Friday (7:35 ET) and Cleveland on Saturday (1:00 ET). The kids are all right for the Amerks, where 20-year-olds Jason Pominville (6+5=11) and Derek Roy (4+6=10) continue to lead the team in scoring, while second-year pro Ryan Miller (4-1-1, 1.32, .951) has been dazzling in net. The Mighty Ducks and Barons have their share of top young talent as well, including former first-round draft picks Michael Holmqvist and Alexei Smirnov in Cincy and Brad Boyes and Marcel Goc in Cleveland.
