Back-To-Back-To-Back Blasts Boost I-Cubs in Series Opener
June 14, 2022 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (27-33) came out on top of game one against the Omaha Storm Chasers (29-30), picking up game one of the series by a final score of 11-6.
Omaha starter Jackson Kowar limited the I-Cubs to a single in the first, but he couldn't hold the offense down for long. Jared Young led off the second inning with a home run, then on the very next pitch, Narciso Crook hit a long ball of his own. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Greg Deichmann made it three in a row, giving the I-Cubs back-to-back-to-back home runs and a 3-0 lead after two innings.
The lineup didn't stop there, however. They tagged Kowar for three more runs in the third on three singles and a double, making their lead 6-0. While he managed to put up a scoreless fourth inning, Kowar surrendered three more runs in the fifth on three more hits before Omaha turned the game over to their bullpen.
On the other side, Iowa starter Cam Sanders was lights-out. He completed three no-hit innings to start his outing, allowing baserunners on three walks and a hit batter, but holding the Storm Chasers scoreless. He finally allowed a one-out single in the fourth, but stranded the runner and finished his outing after four scoreless innings.
With the game in the hands of the bullpens, Omaha fared better than Iowa. They broke the shutout in the sixth inning with a pair of singles and an RBI double from Clay Dungan, cutting Iowa's lead to 10-2. Then, with Brendon Little pitching in the eighth, Brewer Hicklen launched a three-run home run. Paired with another RBI hit from Dungan, that plated four more for Omaha.
That's all the Storm Chasers would get, however, as Erich Uelmen sent them down one-two-three in the ninth, securing the win in the series opener for Iowa by a final score of 11-6.
POSTGAME NOTES:
Every Iowa starter reached base safely at least once tonight, with all but Levi Jordan collecting at least one hit.
Dixon Machado extended his hitting streak to 13 games, the longest by any I-Cub this season.
Narciso Crook has homered in four straight games, making him the third Iowa player to do so this season. Both Robel Garcia and Greg Deichmann previously accomplished the feat.
With Alfonso Rivas' 2-for-5 night, he has recorded multi-hit efforts in three of four games he has played for Iowa this year.
Iowa will continue the series with Omaha tomorrow afternoon, when they will play the second of six games. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Storm Chasers is set for 12:08. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
