Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Houston Aeros scored three unanswered goals, including a pair during the third period, to rally from a 2-0 deficit and take a 3-2 victory over the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday at Van Andel Arena.
The Griffins (22-28-0-1), who were thwarted in their attempt to earn consecutive wins for the first time since Dec. 9-11, will now hit the road for four straight games, beginning with an 8:30 p.m. EST affair on Tuesday against the Texas Stars.
Grand Rapids took advantage of a turnover in the neutral zone to draw first blood for the second straight night. Breaking into the Houston zone, Evan McGrath slipped a pass across to Francis Pare, who sped down the right boards before unleashing a shot from low in the circle that snuck between Aeros netminder Barry Brust and the near post at the 7:11 mark of the opening period.
Jeremy Williams made it a two-goal lead just 35 seconds into the middle period, crashing the net to bang home the rebound of Patrick Rissmiller's shot. But the Aeros got it back with 2:36 remaining in the frame, as Petr Kalus took a pass from Cody Almond out of the left corner and beat Thomas McCollum with a rising wrist shot from high in the left circle.
The Aeros (26-20-6-1) tied it on Almond's power play tally 6:41 into the third, then took the lead with 7:36 left when Peter Zingoni's floating wrister from the right circle found its way inside McCollum's far post.
The Griffins' hopes for netting the equalizer in the waning minutes were diminished by a penalty incurred with 2:59 remaining, and after coincidental penalties with 59 seconds left made it 4-on-4, Grand Rapids could not score despite pulling McCollum for the duration in favor of an extra attacker.
Brust made 20 saves for the win, while McCollum turned aside 30 in the losing effort.
