Norfolk Admirals News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Despite jumping out to a two-goal lead, the visiting Norfolk Admirals lost, 4-3, to the Binghamton Senators Friday night at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Admirals gained some momentum quickly into the first period. The Senators' defense attempted to clear the puck from behind the net, but Jaycob Megna corralled the puck at the blue line and slapped it toward goaltender Scott Greenham. Nathan McIver screened the goaltender and got his stick on the shot to tip it in and put the Admirals up 1-0 at 3:09 of the first frame.
The guests doubled their lead to 2-0 with four minutes remaining in the opening period. Max Friberg sent a pass from his own zone to Mike Sgarbossa, who skated into the Senators' end with Stefan Noesen on a two-on-one. Evading the Binghamton defender, Sgarbossa picked the top corner of the twine with a hard wrister over Greenham's arm at 16:04.
Binghamton cut the deficit to one with 38 seconds remaining in the period and Mark Fistric in the box on a boarding penalty. Carter Camper held the puck on the left wall and centered it to Cole Schneider in the slot. Schneider found Shane Prince at the bottom of the right ring, whose shot beat LaBarbera glove-side. The Senators went into the first intermission down 2-1.
At 6:25 of the second period, the Admirals once more extended their advantage to two goals. Brandon Montour made a strong defensive effort in his own end to thwart the Senators' offense. Montour poked the puck up the wall for Max Friberg to pick up and start a rush the other way. Wasting no time once he crossed the opposing blue line, Friberg fired a blistering slapper from the right circle which fooled Greenham five-hole.
The Senators began their comeback six minutes later. Just off of the face-off, the Senators' Brad Mills collected the puck and caught Max McCormick with a stretch pass at center ice. McCormick skated into the Admirals' zone and got a shot off which beat both Admirals' defenders. LaBarbera was up for the task as he made the initial save, but Zack Smith crashed the net and buried the rebound at 12:03 to make the score 3-2, Norfolk.
Binghamton capitalized yet again with a last-minute goal in the second period to tie the game at 3-3. Prince grabbed the puck in neutral ice and hit Schneider's stick across the red line. Schneider reached the hash marks past three Admirals and threw the puck toward LaBarbera, which deflected off the goaltender's arm and trickled into the cage just inside the post. Fredrik Claesson earned the secondary assist on the tying marker at 19:18.
It took 12:19 for the Senators to score in the third period, a play that began with Schneider's chip below the Norfolk blue line. Derek Grant halted the carom around the boards and touched a drop pass to Prince stationed in the blue paint. Prince shoved in the puck for his second goal of the game and the eventual 4-3 game-winner.
Greenham stopped 28 of the Admirals' 31 shots, and Jason LaBarbera saved 31 of 35 Senators opportunities. Norfolk was blanked on their lone man-advantage opportunity, while Binghamton got one in their three power play chances.
Three Stars:
1) BNG #18 Shane Prince (2 G, 1 A)
2) BNG #15 Cole Schneider (1 G, 2 A)
3) BNG #23 Zack Smith (1 G)
NOTES ... Brandon Montour's assist tonight was his first professional point ... Max Friberg now has three points in his last three games ... It was Nathan McIver's first point since November 18 and first goal since opening night ... Jaycob Megna has assists in back-to-back contests ... It was only the Admirals' fourth loss all season when leading after two periods ... All but one Admiral had at least one shot on net.
