Adduci Hits Grand Slam as Hens Win Third Straight

INDIANAPOLIS - A first-inning grand slam from Jim Adduci powered the Toledo Mud Hens to a 9-6 victory over the Indianapolis Indians on Tuesday at Victory Field.

Adduci was one of three Mud Hens (4-1) with multiple hits on the night, finishing a double shy of the cycle with four RBI and two runs scored. The 15-year pro became the first Toledo batsman to record a grand slam since Matt den Dekker on Aug. 17, 2017 at Charlotte.

Dawel Lugo went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run, while Jason Krizan hit 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI and a run. Jarrod Saltalamacchia reached base four times, going 1-for-2 with a single, three walks, an RBI, and a run.

Warwick Saupold did not surrender a hit in his season debut, going 2.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on two walks while striking out three. Blaine Hardy was credited with the win after tossing a perfect seventh inning, striking out the final two batters he faced. Casey Sander started the game for the Indians (2-3), giving up 11 hits and nine runs, five of which were earned, in 4.1 innings of work for the loss.

The Mud Hens raced ahead to another first-inning lead on the strength of four runs, five hits, and one error. Mike Gerber reached on an error before Lugo and Christin Stewart connected on back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out. After Chad Huffman struck out swinging, Adduci cleared the bases with a grand slam over the right-field wall to give Toledo an early 4-0 advantage.

Toledo added to its lead with a run in the top of the third. Adduci tripled off the base of the wall in center, and scored when Krizan whacked a double down the left-field line to put the Mud Hens in front by a 5-0 margin.

Indianapolis scored three times in the bottom of the third, but the Mud Hens were able to manufacture a run in the top of the fourth. Pete Kozma ripped a base hit into right to lead off the frame, eventually reaching third with two outs. Lugo then made it a 6-3 contest when he doubled to deep left to plate Kozma.

The Mud Hens three more runs in the top of the fifth. Toledo quickly loaded the bases with nobody out, and grabbed a 7-3 lead when Saltalamacchia drew a walk to drive in Huffman. Ronny Rodriguez added a two-run single into center to score Krizan and Saltalamcchia and widen the gap to 9-3.

The Indians pulled one back in the bottom of the fifth, as Jordan Luplow hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Max Moroff and trim Toledo's lead to 9-4. In the bottom of the ninth, Indianapolis generated a two-out rally, cutting the defciit to 9-6 with a walk and three consecutive hits. Once again, Zac Reininger showed his resolve and got Jose Osuna to fly out to right to end the ballgame.

The Mud Hens look to sweep their three-game series against Indianapolis tomorrow, with first pitch from Victory Field set for 11:05 a.m.
