Syracuse Mets News Release
Rochester, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Rochester Red Wings, 3-2, Tuesday night at Frontier Field. Alejandro De Aza hit a game winning double in the eighth inning off Alan Busenitz to lift the Chiefs to their second win in a row to open the series against the Red Wings. Tuesday's game was the fifth straight one-run game to start the season and to be decided after the seventh inning. The Chiefs improved their record to 3-2, moving over .500 for the first time since April 27, 2017, when they were 8-7.
Syracuse (3-2) scored the game inning run in the eighth after Chris Dominguez hit a one-out double, the Chiefs first extra-base hit since the second inning Friday night. With the count 3-0, Alejandro De Aza followed with a double into the right-field corner to score Dominguez and give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead.
The Chiefs had taken the lead for the first time an inning earlier. De Aza walked against Fernando Romero to start the seventh with the Chiefs trailing 1-0. Irving Falu followed with a fly ball to right center field, that hit off the glove of Jake Cave in right, allowing the runners to get to second and third on the two-base error. Alex Dunlap the hit a slow ground ball to third, and the throw to first was late for Dunalp's first Triple-A hit and RBI, tying the game at one. Tyler Jones the placed a perfect bunt down the first-bast line, and Falu scored from third to give the Chiefs their first lead.
Rochester (0-2) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Gregorio Petit hit an RBI double off John Simms, scoring Nick Buss, who had doubled, knotting the score at two.
The Red Wings led 1-0 until the seventh on an unearned run off Cesar Vargas. Petit and Zack Grantie reached on singles, and moved up to second and third on a passed ball on Dunlap. Cave then grounded out to first, scoring Petit for a 1-0 lead.
Vargas was excellent in his Chiefs debut, allowing just the lone unearned run in five innings of five hit ball. Vargas did not walk a batter and struck out four.
The Chiefs will go for the series sweep Wednesday at 12:35 p.m. RHP Austin Voth is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite LHP Dietrich Enns for the Red Wings.
