Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Jason Stone stopped the first 33 shots he faced and finished with 38 saves as Victoria snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over Alaska Sunday in front of 3,502 at Sullivan Arena.

Playing without Scott Gomez, the Aces fell behind with 6:34 left in the first period when Victoria rookie Seth Leonard scored his first professional goal after tallying 50 last year in the Western Hockey League. Leonard scored again midway through the second period with the Salmon Kings on a power play, one of five they scored in the series. Alaska, which had won the first two games of this series easily by scores of 7-3 and 5-2, saw its deficit grow to 3-0 when Brad Dexter blasted a slap shot past Aces goaltender Lance Mayes with 1:13 having elapsed in the third period. Alaska kept peppering Stone, out-shooting Victoria 17-4 over the final 20 minutes, but only Olivier Filion slipped one past him, a goal that came at the 9:41 mark. The Aces (8-6-1) failed to score on two subsequent power plays over the final 10 minutes and finished 0-for-6 with the man advantage in losing for only the second time in their last eight games. Jason Hegberg sealed the victory for Victoria (3-8) with an empty-netter in the game's final minute.

Alaska travels to Boise next week for three games against defending Kelly Cup champion Idaho, who swept a season-opening series at the Bank of America Centre between the two clubs in October. All three games start at 5:05 p.m. ADT and will be available on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks, but the first two, Wednesday, November 24, and Friday, November 26, will be broadcast live on KFQD's sister station, KHAR AM 590, before returning to flagship station AM 750 for Saturday's series finale.
