Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Anchorage, Alaska – After running their losing streak to six games the Salmon Kings knew they only had to keep working hard and eventually the next win would come. It took a hot goalie and a breakout performance from a rookie but the Salmon Kings got it done today in Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

Jason Stone, making just his third start of the season, played an outstanding 3rd period stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced including two short handed situations in the final 10 minutes after the Aces had cut the lead to 3-1 on a goal by Olivier Filion at 9:41. The Salmon Kings managed just four shots in the 3rd but were able to record a pair of goals, the first from defenceman Brad Dexter at 1:13 put the Salmon Kings up 3-1 and an empty by Jason Hegberg at 19:13 to ice it at 4-1.

The first two periods by contrast were much more even in the shots department with the Aces holding just a 22-19 advantage after two periods. The first period did prove monumental for one Salmon King however, former WHL 50-goal man Seth Leonard finally tallied his first professional goal in his eighth game. Leonard's goal came at 13:26 on a set-up from veteran Mike Barrie and Jason Hegberg. Barrie went on to record three assists in total on the night. The 1st period ended with the Salmon Kings holding a 1-0 advantage.

The second period saw Leonard's hot hand continue as he recorded his second goal, a power play marker, at 9:58. Corey Smith and Mike Barrie had the helpers. The Aces were again stymied by Duncan, BC's Stone as he stopped another 13 Alaska shots. Stone's and Leonard's performances allowed the Salmon Kings to take that 2-0 lead into the 3rd period.

The Salmon Kings move to 3-8 on the season and return on Monday for a hard earned rest before heading back out on the road to California for games against Fresno (2) and Bakersfield. These three games are the final matches of the 14 game road trip that opened the inaugural Salmon Kings season.

The Salmon Kings play their first game home contest until December 5th at Bear Mountain Arena against the Bakersfield Condors.
