Aces Pitcher Homers Again in Loss

Las Vegas, Nevada. - The house always wins in Las Vegas and the saying remained true during the Aces road trip to Sin City this week. Reno lost the third and final game of the series tonight by a score of 18-4. The Aces totaled just three hits on the night, each of them doubles. Their lone run of the contest came in the top of the second inning. Down by one run, Wyatt Mathisen doubled to start the inning to give Reno runners in scoring position with no outs. Outfielder Jamie Westbrook followed with a double of his own, scoring Mathisen, and tying the game at one. Starter Matt Koch blanked Las Vegas in the bottom of the third but saw things get a little out of hand in the bottom half of the fourth. The Aviators plated six runs on five hits and two homers to take a 7-1 lead. Koch was replaced by Right-hander Joey Krehbiel after allowing a three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth. Krehbiel was tagged for a two-run homer before ending Las Vegas' five-run outburst. Mathisen came on to pitch in the bottom of the eighth and Las Vegas played home run derby. Mathisen got three back with one swing of the bat but the comeback effort fell short. The loss brings Reno to a record of 59-69 as they head back to the Biggest Little City for a four-game series against the Salt Lake Bees. First pitch tomorrow at Greater Nevada Field is slated for 7:05 p.m.

Notes & Information

Debut: Former Ace Joel Payamps made his Major League debut tonight for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 25-year-old right-hander faced Reno High School alum Garrett Hampson as his first batter. After falling behind in a 3-0 count, Payamps fired in three fastballs for called strikes to record his first strikeout. Payamps went three innings, allowed four hits and struck out three.

Mathisen the Pitcher/hitter: Wyatt Mathisen made his second appearance on the mound for the Reno Aces tonight. His first outing came on May 29 vs. Tacoma at Greater Nevada Field. In his first outing, Mathisen came off the mound at hit a three-run home run making him the last pitcher to homer in a game since Braden Shipley on April 17, 2017. Tonight, Mathisen duplicated this feat, launching a three-run blast in the top of the 9th following his one inning of work.
