Aces double up Victoria 6-3

Alaska Aces News Release

VICTORIA, BC – Chris Minard scored two goals for the second straight game and Chris Heisten added two as the Alaska Aces defeated the Victoria Salmon Kings 6-3 in front of 2,218 Tuesday at Bear Mountain Arena.

Alaska scored the game's first goal for only the second time in its last 11 outings as Scott Gomez found Minard at 6:31 of the opening period with the teams skating four-on-four. That same combination had hooked up for the overtime game-winner in Alaska's last outing on New Year's Eve, a 5-4 triumph over San Diego. The Aces controlled most of the first period but had to settle for a 1-0 lead at intermission after out-shooting the Salmon Kings 12-5.

Alaska seemingly assumed complete control of the game over the first 10 minutes of the second period, extending its advantage to 3-0 on Heisten's second goal of the year (and first in 27 games) at 2:40 and a power play goal by Charles Linglet at 8:21, assisted by Gomez and Minard. But Victoria used its own potent power play (ranked third in the ECHL coming into the game) to finally get on the board, as Seth Leonard scored at 12:20 on a rebound left in front of Aces goaltender Peter Aubry. Three minutes later, as another Salmon Kings power play expired, Jim Gattoliat's shot from the point sailed past a screened Aubry (26 saves) to bring Victoria within 3-2 heading into the final period.

The Salmon Kings finally drew even when Rob Voltera scored seven and a half minutes into the third period, but Alaska immediately responded, regaining the lead on the very next shift as Joe Talbot flicked in a backhander at 8:02. Linglet found Minard all alone in front for a 5-3 bulge with 5:18 remaining for the latter's 17th of the year (2nd in the ECHL). Heisten, who had not scored since October 23, capped the scoring with a shorthanded empty-netter at 19:39, assisted by rookie Vladimir Novak, who enjoyed the first multi-point night of his brief pro career with two helpers. The win kept Alaska tied for fifth in the tightly packed West at 15-12-2 and marked the club's first in five tries to begin a road trip.

The Aces and the Salmon Kings (7-17-3) continue what amounts to a four-game series tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. AST before returning to Anchorage for two more games against one another, Friday and Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. in Sullivan Arena. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off. All three contests will be broadcast on flagship station KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, where all games played in Anchorage also are made available on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks.
