San Diego Looks To Break Three-Game Winless Skid

January 5, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls, still with five defensemen on the injured list, look to rebound from last night's loss in Las Vegas, as they host the Peoria Rivermen tonight at the Sports Arena for the first time ever.

SERIES HISTORY:

This is the first-ever meeting between the Gulls and the Rivermen. The two teams will clash one more time in the regular season.

San Diego has played one game outside its division so far this season, beating the Florida Everblades on Nov. 4. The Gulls will play 11 more games against non-West Division teams. Peoria has played five games outside its division, holding a 4-0-1 mark.

LAST GAME: (JAN. 4 @ LAS VEGAS):

The Wranglers scored three times with the man advantage, beating the undermanned Gulls 4-2. It was the second straight game that San Diego could only dress two healthy defensemen and Las Vegas certainly took advantage. Scott Borders gave the Gulls an early 1-0 lead, but Vegas netted two straight power-play goals to go ahead 2-1. Mark Pederson tied it with a San Diego power-play marker, but the Wranglers answered again with two more tallies.

GULLS UPDATE:

The Gulls (15-9-4) enter the day third in the West Division, five points behind the first-place Long Beach Ice Dogs and four points back of the second-place Bakersfield Condors... San Diego, however, has two games in hand on Bakersfield and has played one fewer game than Long Beach... The Gulls are winless in their last three games (0-1-2) but are 11-4-2 overall in their last 17 contests... The Blue and Orange are 10-2-2 at home this season... Before last night, San Diego's previous 10 games were one-goal decisions...

OTHER NOTES:

San Diego still has five defensemen out with injuries: Andrew Canzanello (bruised spleen), Nikita Korovkin (bruised spleen), Evgueni Nourislamov (sprained knee), Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder) and Sean Murphy (broken thumb)... Goaltender Trevor Koenig is also on the injured list with a sore elbow... The Gulls are only four points off last season's pace in which they amassed a franchise record 108 points... San Diego has the second-worst penalty killing in the ECHL (77.9 percent)...

PEORIA UPDATE:

Peoria (11-13-4) begins the day seventh in the North Division, nine points behind the Reading Royals for the fourth and final playoff spot... The Rivermen, however, are unbeaten in their last five games (4-0-1), all of which have come against West Division teams... Brian McCullough, a 40-goal scorer last season, leads the club with 28 points (12g, 16a)... Peoria is 10-1-0 when scoring three-or-more goals in a game... After tonight, the Rivermen will play two games in Las Vegas before returning home...

TRANSACTIONS:

Defenseman Jason Courtemanche was signed today... Trent Clark was released on Monday... Goaltender Eddy Ferhi was re-assigned by the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks on Saturday... Koenig was placed on the seven-day injured list Saturday... Murphy (30-day) and Canzanello (seven-day) were both placed on the injured list Saturday as well, joining Shockey (30-day)...
