Chesapeake Baysox News Release

ERIE, Pa. - Second baseman Miguel Abreu and catcher Adam Donachie combined to outhit the SeaWolves as the Baysox cruised to a 6-1 win over Erie. Abreu finished 5-5 while Donachie went a perfect 3-3 with two walks as the Baysox closed out a seven game road swing by taking two out of three from the SeaWolves. Baltimore native Brandon Erbe picked up his first win as the Baysox improved to 9-10 on the season, five and a half games behind division leading Akron.

Abreu got things going for the Baysox in the second off SeaWolves starter Jay Sborz. Alfredo Figaro was scheduled to start for Erie, but was a late scratch with a sore back. Abreu doubled to start the inning and right fielder Brian Conley and Donachie followed with free passes to load the bases. One batter later with first baseman Melvin Dorta at the plate, a wild pitch brought home Abreu for the first run of the game. Later in the at-bat Dorta lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Conley, and Donachie scored when third baseman Jonathan Tucker reached on a ground ball through the wickets of SeaWolves shortstop Shawn Roof to put the Baysox up 3-0.

Erbe looked sharp once again, striking out three and allowing three hits and a walk over 6.0 innings. The offense finally managed to help Erbe out after scoring only four runs combined in his previous three starts on the season. The 21-year-old right-hander has allowed two earned runs in 20.2 innings on the season, while holding hitters to a paltry .157 average against.

The Baysox once again took advantage of defensive miscues by Erie to tack on a run in the fourth. Donachie surprised a backed up infield by bunting for a hit to start the inning off Erie reliever Ramon Garcia. Shortstop Robert Valido followed with a shot to the right center field gap that advanced Donachie to third, but Erie right fielder Brennan Boesch gunned down Valido at second for the first out of the inning. Dorta followed with a ground ball that Cale Iorg booted and Donachie scored his second run of the game.

The offense continued to pile on in the fifth and sixth, tallying a run in each inning off Garcia. Donachie continued to give Erie pitchers fits by lining an RBI single to score Abreu in the fifth. Center fielder Ambiorix Concepcion doubled home designated hitter Paco Figueroa in the sixth, putting the Baysox up six as Erie struggled to find pitchers. Outfielder Joe Tucker came on to work a scoreless ninth inning for the SeaWolves, his first professional appearance as a pitcher.

Erie's only run came in bottom of the eighth, when Scott Sizemore took Baysox reliever James Hoey deep for his second home run of the season. Southpaw closer Wilfrido Perez finished off the Baysox win, shutting out Erie through the final 1.1 innings in a non-save situation. Perez has not allowed an earned run in 10.0 innings on the season while striking out eleven and holding hitters to a .156 average against.

The Baysox (9-10) have a day off tomorrow as they head home to kick off a three-game set against division leading Akron (14-4) this Friday at Prince George's Stadium. LHP Bobby Livingston (1-1, 3.57 ERA) takes the bump for Bowie while LHP Chuck Lofgren (1-0, 1.13 ERA) goes for the Aeros. Game time is set for 7:05.
