New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH-Marc Rzepczynski, David Shinskie and Nate Starner combined on a five-hit shutout, and Adam Calderone and Brian Dopirak both launched their fourth home runs of the season in the New Hampshire Fisher Cats' 5-0 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats Wednesday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Rzepczynski (4-1) went the first five innings, holding New Britain (7-11) to four hits and three walks to notch his fourth win, tied for the Eastern League lead. He fanned eight more batters, raising his league-leading strikeout total to 35 on the season.
Shinskie turned in three innings before Starner closed out the gem for New Hampshire (12-7), which snapped a two-game losing streak by turning in its league-best fourth shutout of the season.
The Fisher Cats grabbed a 1-0 lead against losing pitcher Ryan Mullins in the bottom of the first inning when Luis Sanchez (2-for-5, 2B, SB, 2 R) and Brad Emaus (1-for-4, 2B, SB, RBI) hit back-to-back doubles.
Calderone (2-for-4, HR) led off the bottom of the third with his fourth homer of the season, a solo blast off Mullins (0-4) that landed on the access road in right, giving the Fisher Cats a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Sanchez singled, stole second and scored on Dopirak's double to deep centerfield for a 3-0 lead.
Mullins allowed four runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings to drop his third decision to New Hampshire this season. The southpaw fanned six and walked one.
Al Quintana (2-for-4, RBI) drove in his first career Fisher Cats' RBI with a bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the fifth inning against Zach Ward, plating David Cooper (1-for-4, R) and raising the lead to 4-0.
Leading off the seventh, Dopirak (2-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI) capped the scoring by unloading on Ward's 3-2 pitch for his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot over the rightfield wall.
The Fisher Cats send right-hander Rei Gonzalez (1-0, 1.37) to the mound for the rubber match of the three-game series on Thursday morning at 11:05am against New Britain right-hander Cole Devries (1-1, 5.02). The BayRing Pre-Game Show begins at 10:45am on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy.
Thursday morning is EnergyNorth Propane Educational Day at Merchantsauto.com Stadium, and it is the final Guaranteed Weather Game of the homestand. If the temperature is below 70-degrees at gametime, all fans in attendance will be able to redeem their tickets for free tickets to any future Sunday-through-Wednesday home game during the 2009 regular season, excluding Portland Sea Dogs' games!
