Altoona Curve News Release
LAST TIME OUT:
The Altoona Curve were unable to secure a big hit, stranding 10 men in scoring position as they fell to the Reading Phillies, 3-1 at First Energy Stadium. Brad Lincoln suffered the loss, allowing all three runs over 5.0 innings of work
TONIGHT'S GAME AT A GLANCE:
The Altoona Curve will play the second game of a three-game set tonight against Reading at First Energy Stadium. Altoona and Reading met last week and split a rain-shortened two-game series, 1-1.
GOVERNOR'S CUP UPDATE:
Implemented for the first time in 2003, the Governor's Cup is awarded annually to the winner of the season series between Reading and Altoona. The Curve housed the Cup from 2003-07, before the R-Phils grabbed the prized piece for the first time last year. So far, Reading has grabbed an early lead in the quest for the Cup, leading the 2009 season series, 2-1.
TONIGHT'S STARTING PITCHERS:
RHP Jared Hughes will take the hill for the Curve tonight and try to break a personal two-game losing streak. Hughes suffered the loss in his last outing as he lasted just 3.2 innings at Akron on Thursday (4/23).
RHP Vance Worley will take the hill for Reading in just his 17th professional start. Worley will make his first start of the season against Altoona. Like his mound opponent tonight, Worley also attended Long Beach State University...Worley was taken by Philadelphia in the third round of last year's draft and made two starts for Short-Season Williamsport before he was promoted to Lakewood (A). Worley sported an overall record of 3-2 with a 2.48 ERA between both teams in 13 starts.
BULL OF A PEN:
Over the last 13 games, Altoona's bullpen has been called to duty often. They have come through, tossing 55.2 innings over that span, allowing just 10 earned runs (1.62 ERA)...RHP Lincoln Holdzkom has also not allowed a run in his last five outings (9.2 ip)...RHP Jean Machi has only allowed one earned run in 10.2 innings pitched this season (0.84 ERA)
RIGHT BACK AT IT:
On Sunday, Jim Negrych had his nine-game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-1. However, Negrych has picked up right where he left off. With a 3-for-4 performance last night, Negrych has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games (17-for-35, .486) to lift his overall average to .381, which stands as the second best in the entire Eastern League...Negrych has also reached base safely in his last 14 games.
