
Connecticut edges Trenton 3-2

(Trenton, NJ)- Connecticut scored the go-ahead two runs in fourth inning, and held on to defeat Trenton 3-2 on Wednesday night from Waterfront Park. The rubber game of the series will be on Thursday night.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Thunder Outfielder James Cooper was thrown out at home plate by Connecticut Outfielder Mike Mooney for the final out of the game. Trenton First baseman Kevin Smith singled to center field with Cooper on second base, and two outs in the frame. But, Mooney's throw to the plate prevented the tying run from scoring. Connecticut Reliever Daniel Otero picked up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Connecticut (9-10) scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Defenders loaded the bases off of Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister with no outs. Connecticut Catcher Tyler LaTorre scored on a passed ball from third base to tie the game at 3-3. Connecticut took a 4-3 lead on an RBI ground out by Third baseman Brad Boyer. Boyer went 1 x 3 with a run and an RBI. Connecticut Catcher Tyler LaTorre went 1 x 1 with a run and three walks in the win.
Down 1-0 in the third inning, Trenton (9-8) scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. With the bases loaded and no outs, Shortstop Eduardo Nunez picked up an RBI ground out to tie the game at 2-2. Second baseman Reegie Corona followed with an RBI single to score First baseman Kevin Smith to give the Thunder a 3-2 lead.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister (1-1) went four innings and yielded five hits and three runs (two earned). He struck out five and walked four. Connecticut Starting Pitcher Henry Sosa (1-0) tossed five innings to pick up the win. He only allowed two hits and two runs. Trenton's bullpen tossed five shutout innings.
Trenton Catcher Kyle Anson went 2 x 3 with a run in the loss. Outfielder Colin Curtis had his 13-game hitting streak to come to an end. He was 0 x 4. Trenton Third Baseman Marcos Vechionacci extended his hitting streak to six games by going 2 x 4.
Trenton and Connecticut play the final game of a three-game series on Thursday night from Waterfront Park. RHP Ivan Nova (2-0, 2.03) will start for Trenton against Connecticut RHP Daryl Maday (0-1, 2.00). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
