April 29, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
TRENTON, NJ- A collision ending between Connecticut and Trenton but it was the Defenders walking away with a 3-2 victory to even the series at one game a piece.
Connecticut for the second time this road-trip had to use two rallies to pull off a win. In the fourth inning the Defenders would load the bases and plate one to tie the game when C-Tyler LaTorre scored on a wild pitch and they would add the second on an RBI groundout by 3B-Brad Boyer to score SS-Sharlon Scoop to take a 3-2 lead.
The Defenders scored first in the third when the newly hot hitting 2B-Brad Boyer singled with one out then scored on a CF-Mike Mooney double to center.
Trenton responded quickly in the third inning getting the first two batters aboard. C-Kyle Anson would tie the game up on an RBI groundout by SS-Eduardo Nunez and shortly after would take a one run lead at 2-1 when 2B-Reegie Corona delivered an RBI single to plate 1B-Kevin Smith. That would be all for the Thunder though.
Defenders starter, RHP-Henry Sosa (1-0) was fantastic keeping the Thunder bats quite. Sosa out lasted Trenton's starter, Zach McAllister (1-1) pitching five innings, allowing two earned runs off of five hits, walked one and struck out a pair, as he cruised to his first win of the season.
McAllister in his second outing versus Connecticut this season fell short as he picked up the loss. McAllister tossed only four innings and gave up three runs two earned off of five hits, walked four and fanned five.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Trenton would try a rally of their own as they would get RF-James Cooper in scoring position after he reached on a fielder's choice. 1B-Kyle Anson would send a shot up the middle and Cooper would try to score from second to tie the game but CF-Mike Mooney fired a throw home where catcher Jackson Williams who came in as a defensive substation held on to after a collision with Cooper to seal the victory for Connecticut.
The win sets up a rubber match tomorrow. Connecticut will have RHP-Daryl Maday (0-0) toeing the rubber versus Trenton's RHP-Ivan Nova (2-0). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm from Waterfront Park. Catch all the action on the Defenders Flagship Station WICH 1310AM or online at ctdefenders.com.
The Defenders return home Friday night to take on the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) at 6:35pm. For more information on tickets, call the Box Office at (860)-887-7962 or online at ctdefenders.com. Friday's are always Firework nights and May 1 is Magnet Schedule Giveaway night courtesy of Aaron's.
