Aerodynamics...
Dressed to the Nines...Starter Hector Rondon and the Aeros kept the misery going for Harrisburg in the early stages of this Eastern League season, holding off a late rally to nip the Senators 3-2 and send them to their 10th straight loss last night. Rondon struck out seven of the first 11 hitters he faced en route to setting a new Aeros season-high with nine Ks in the game, and worked into the seventh for his first quality start of the season. The native of Guatire, VZ remained perfect on the year, winning his fourth straight start to open the season as the Aeros continued their best start in franchise history by improving to 14-4 on the season. Akron is currently tied for the second-best record in all of professional baseball: the Fort Wayne TinCaps (A, Midwest League, San Diego Padres) are also 14-4, while the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees (AAA, International League, New York Yankees) have the best record at 15-3.
Turning Point...
Rondon departed after 6.2 innings last night as RHP Erik Stiller recorded the final out of the seventh (stranding two inherited runners in the process), but Stiller was even more impressive in keeping the lead in the eighth. Mike Daniel and Leonard Davis led off the eighth with singles, and a bobble by RF Jerad Head put the runners at second and third. Bill Rhinehart then followed with a drive to center that Mickey Hall dropped to score a run and put men back at second and third in what was suddenly a one-run game. Stiller recovered to strikeout ex-Aero Matt Whitney for the first out however, and after intentionally walking Marvin Lowrance to load the bases came back to punch-out Edgardo Baez swinging and Ofilio Castro looking to escape the fire. Vinnie Pestano then worked a drama-free ninth, retiring the side in order. MICK-Lovin...Despite his dropped fly ball in the Harrisburg half of the eighth, CF Mickey Hall continued to swing the bat well and in fact drove in the deciding run with his two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. The native of Marietta, GA is hitting .467 (7-15) over his last six games, with six walks and a pair of multi-hit games over that span as well, boosting his average on the year more than 200 points from .077 to his current mark of .286 entering play tonight.
Roster Moves...
The Aeros made a pair of roster moves today, receiving RHP Steven Wright from Class A Mahoning Valley and RHP Jeanmar Gomez from Class A Kinston. Wright did not appear in a game for Mahoning Valley since their season hasn't started yet, but was on the roster to make room for reliever Paolo Espino when Akron was short-handed in the bullpen. Gomez opened this year with a return trip to the K-Tribe and made four starts, going 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA. He allowed only five walks in 24.0 innings and held Carolina League hitters to a .202 batting average against him. Gomez will take Wright's spot in the rotation and make his Eastern League debut tomorrow morning in the series finale.
