Mavericks Acquire Steven Later to Complete Trade with Brahmas

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Missouri Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman announced Sunday the Central Hockey League (CHL) team has acquired defenseman Steven Later to complete a trade that sent forward Sean Muncy to the Texas Brahmas. The Mavericks also acquired forward Todd Griffith in the trade initially announced on Friday, February 4.

Later, 26 (9/12/84), is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound defenseman currently in his sixth year of professional hockey. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native played his first three seasons in the ECHL and 11 games with the American Hockey League's (AHL) Toronto Marlies during his rookie season.

"Steven Later is a big and strong defenseman who instantly makes us a better hockey team," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "He has a lot of experience and is the kind of player other teams do not like to play against."

In total, Later has played in 268 professional games in the AHL, ECHL, IHL and CHL and he has 140 points (44-96140) and 1,045 penalty minutes. This season with the Brahmas, he has 20 points (3-1720) and 95 penalty minutes in 31 games. He had a career year with the IHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks during the 2008-09 season where he had career highs in points with 29 (6-2329) and penalty minutes with 296.

Prior to playing professionally, Later played three seasons of major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) where he amassed 18 goals, 58 assists and 426 penalty minutes in 139 games played.

The terms of the deal stipulate that Later must report to the Mavericks to complete the trade. If he does not, the Mavericks will retain his rights and get an additional player from Texas at the end of the season.

In other roster news, Mavericks' forward Simon Watson has been taken off of the injured reserve list and defenseman Jared Lavender has been placed on the 10-day injured reserve.

Missouri heads to Mississippi on Tuesday, February 8 before three-straight games against the Colorado Eagles. The Mavericks will host the Eagles on Friday, February 11 before heading to Loveland for two games at Budweiser Events Center.
