Trade Wrap-Up

The CHL ‚¬â„¢s Trade Deadline came and went today with little activity. The Evansville IceMen, last in the Turner Conference, made the most noise dealing their leading goal scorer Damian Surma (22 goals) to the Dayton Gems in exchange for rookie forward Erik Boisvert (12-14&) and future considerations. The IceMen also acquired defenseman Jamie Lovell (3-12=15) from the Bloomington PrairieThunder in exchange for defenseman Tom Galvin (0-6=6). The final activity from the IceMen was a part of a previous deal as they sent defenseman George Bradley (0-3=3) to Texas to complete the early trade for goaltender Jeff Harvey. The Sundogs snagged forward Craig Macdonald from the PrairieThunder in exchange for defenseman Billy Bezeau and forward Jason Williams. Macdonald scored 44 goals a year ago in Bloomington has been bothered by injuries this season netting just three goals in 30 games. Also to complete a previous deal, the Missouri Mavericks landed defenseman Steven Later from Texas to complete the Sean Muncy trade that was made last week.

Perfect Road Trip

There were some question marks for the defending CHL Champion Rapid City Rush (27-17-4) when they left home for a season-long eight-game road trip after a 4-2 loss to the Evansville IceMen (15-23-5) on January 22 but two weeks later and few questions remain. All the Rush did on their journey was go 8-0 outscoring the opposition 31-17. Former CHL Defenseman of the Year Vladimir Hartinger had been in an extended scoring slump not finding the back of the net for 23 straight games, but on the trip he scored four times in the team ‚¬â„¢s last six games including potting three game winners. 2010 CHL Rookie of the Year Danny Battochio entered the trip at 14-15-4 and not in top form but after six straight wins, he is now tied for the league lead with 20 victories (Colorado ‚¬â„¢s Kyle Jones). The Rush find themselves tied for first place in the Turner Conference with the Colorado Eagles (28-15-2) both sitting with 58 points. Rapid City get s a well-deserved break as they are off until the weekend when they host the Arizona Sundogs (18-23-5) in a pair of games.

A New Leader

With his three assist game in Saturday ‚¬â„¢s 5-3 win at Mississippi, Tulsa Oilers forward Chad Costello has taken over the stranglehold that Odessa ‚¬â„¢s Sebastien Thinel had on the league ‚¬â„¢s scoring lead. Costello, the Sher-Wood CHL Player of the Month for January, has 70 points (27-43=70) and is also carrying the league ‚¬â„¢s longest point streak of the season sitting currently at 16 games (35 points over streak). The Oilers will travel to Allen to face the Berry Conference leading Americans on Tuesday night.

Numbers Game

4- The number of goals that Wichita defenseman Andrew Martens scored in the second period of Saturday ‚¬â„¢s 5-4 loss by the Thunder to the Fort Wayne Komets. The four scores were the most by a defenseman in a single game since the CHL/WPHL merger and the first time since Dec. 4, 2009 that four goals were scored by one player in the same period of a game (Mississippi ‚¬â„¢s Louis Dumont). Martens leads all CHL defensemen with 12 goals.

7- The length of the Colorado Eagles current win streak after their back-to-back wins in Odessa this past weekend. The Eagles are tied with Rapid City for first place in the Turner Conference and have a date with Quad City remaining on Tuesday night before engaging in a three-game set with the Missouri Mavericks (Friday in Missouri and Saturday/Sunday in Colorado).

6-0- The record of the Berry Conference leading Allen Americans against the Texas Brahmas after Saturday ‚¬â„¢s 2-1 win at NYTEX Sports Centre. The two goals was the lowest output by Allen in any game versus their rivals this season as they entered the contest averaging five points per game against Texas.

32- The number of seconds in the last minute of the third period that it took for the Fort Wayne Komets to score two goals tying their game Friday night versus Wichita. The Komets would score at the 19:20 mark and the 19:52 mark sending the game to overtime and would eventually stun the Thunder in a shootout. The Komets won both games over the Thunder this past weekend by identical 5-4 scores. The Komets have now won five straight games and are 12-3-4 since December 22.

9- The number of games this past weekend that were decided by one-goal out of the 12 combined games played Friday and Saturday night. On the season, 162 games (out of 392) have been decided by a goal (41%). The Missouri Mavericks lead the way with 24 one-goal games (10-10-4) followed by Quad City who has played in 23 (14-8-1). The team with the fewest one-goal decisions is the Allen Americans who have played in 10 going 8-1-1 in those contests.

Slap Shots

-Odessa has hit a slide once again in their up and down season losing six straight games. The Jacks are just 2-7-3 since Jan. 8 but prior to their most recent slide posted a 15-5-1 mark between Nov. 16 and Jan. 7. Odessa travels to Laredo to face the Bucks on Thursday night.

-The Fort Wayne Komets have been unbeatable on the road in 2011 winning all seven starts. Five of those seven victories have come by one goal. The Komets will look to stay perfect on the road on Saturday when they travel to Dayton.

-Colorado ‚¬â„¢s Kyle Jones has won seven straight starts allowing 12 goals over that stretch. This after posting a 4-7-1 mark between Dec. 4 and Jan. 23. Jones is 20-7-2 on the season with a 2.44 goals against average.

-Bossier-Shreveport goalie Brian Foster made 22 saves in his team ‚¬â„¢s 5-1 win over Evansville on Thursday winning for the first time since Dec. 10. He is 9-9-1 on the season with a 3.20 goals against average.

-Laredo ‚¬â„¢s Jeff Bes was named the Oakley CHL Player of the Week on Monday after his seven point week (3-4=7). The Bucks won two of three games last week in Arizona and Bes earned the game winning goal in both victories.

-After scoring just once in his first 37 games, Arizona forward Joel Irving has scored goals in each of his last three games.
