Arizona Sundogs News Release
The Arizona Sundogs (18-23-5) finished a season-long nine-game homestand with a 3-5-1 record after going 2-0-1 in its first three contests. Seven of Arizona's next eight games come away from Tim's Toyota Center with the lone home match set for Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7:05pm against the Odessa Jackalopes.
Arizona was unable to snap its four-game losing streak and earn a win in Head Coach and General Manager Marco Pietroniro's 300th game, falling to the Laredo Bucks, 5-3, Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center. Laredo snapped a four-game slide of its own with the victory.
Torrie Jung backed the Laredo Bucks to their second straight win with one of the CHL's strongest performances by a netminder this season, turning aside 48 shots, including 20 in the first period, in a 4-1 win Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center. The Sundogs offered up a season high 49 shots on net in the loss.
The Sundogs avoided a seventh straight loss in the final game of a season-long nine-game homestand that saw them play its final six games in an eight-day span, downing the Laredo Bucks, 4-3, Friday night at Tim's Toyota Center.
Next up for Arizona is a two-game set against the defending Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Champion Rapid City Rush on Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday. Feb. 12. Both games are set for 7:05pm (Arizona time). Sundogs Storylines:
- Arizona outshot Laredo 126-69 in the two teams' three-game set last week, holding the Bucks to a season-low three shots against in a period on Tuesday (3rd period) and again on Wednesday (1st period). The Sundogs held a 21-3 advantage in shots in Wednesday's first period and a 38-8 shot cushion after 40 minutes of play Wednesday.
- Collecting just one goal in his first 37 games to start the season, veteran forward Joel Irving has picked up three goals in his last three games.
- Forward Luke Erickson was named the league's Oakley Three Stars Award for the month of January, earning a star in six of the 11 contests in which he played, including four first star selections, for 24 total points. Erickson finished the month of January with 17 points (11g/6a) in 11 games, being held without a point just once. The Roseau, Minnesota, native collected points in the month's first eight games before having the league's second-longest point streak (13 games) come to an end in a 4-1 loss to the Colorado Eagles on January 28. Erickson is tied for the league-lead in goals (29) and leads the Sundogs in scoring with 50 points (29g/21a) in 39 games.
- The Sundogs lead the CHL in minor penalties (348), major penalties (57), power-play goals for (53) and power-play goals against (61).
- Cam Keith's 11 power-play goals are tied for the most in the CHL along with teammate Erickson and Matt Summers of Mississippi.
- Kyle Hood ranks second in the CHL with 24 power-play assists, one back of Odessa's Sebastien Thinel. Hood leads the team in assists (39) and ranks second in scoring with 48 points.
- Arizona has a plus-15 shot differential in the first period and a plus-35 advantage in the third period this season but is minus-66 in the second period.
- The Sundogs own the second-best home power play in the CHL (22.4%) but just the 15th-best road power play (14.7%).
- Jason Williams ranks fourth among CHL rookies in scoring with 26 points. The first-year forward ranks third in goals (12) and leads all rookies in power-play goals (8) and shorthanded assists (3) and points (4).
- First-year defenseman Billy Bezeau leads CHL rookies in minor penalties (29) and ranks second in shots (130) and power-play assists (8).
- Arizona is 12-12-2 against fellow Berry Conference opponents but just 6-11-3 against Turner Conference teams.
- The Sundogs are 10-2-4 when leading after the first period, 10-2-3 when leading after the second period, 5-7-1 when tied after the first period, 4-3-0 when tied after two periods of play, 3-14-0 when trailing after the first period and 4-18-2 when trailing after two periods. Arizona is 7-15-1 when outshooting an opponent and 11-7-4 when outshot by an opponent.
- Arizona is 11-3-5 in one-goal games this season.
