Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The seventh annual Teddy Bear Toss this past Saturday night couldn't have gone much better. A shoot-out win for the Condors, a sell-out crowd, and 6,119 stuffed animals collected by the United Way.
The weekend after Thanksgiving can only mean one thing in Condorstown - Teddy Bear Toss! The 8,815 fans in attendance, the third largest crowd in team history, didn't have to wait long as Condor Nate Metcalf scored the first goal with just over 5 minutes remaining in the first period. For the next several minutes fans flung stuffed animals onto the ice. It took more than 45 volunteers 13 minutes to clear the fur from the floor. An amazing 6,119 stuffed toys were collected. The Condors went on to beat Fresno 4-3 in a shoot-out in front of the third largest crowd in the league so far this season. 29 Eyewitness News, KERN News Talk 1410 and Wells Fargo Bank sponsored the night.
"What can you say - the Teddy Bear Toss is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year in Bakersfield," said Condors President Matthew Riley. "It's an incredible sight to see all the teddy bears flying through the air. The support from our fans year after year is tremendous, and we're glad we can be a conduit to help those less fortunate."
"The annual Teddy Bear Toss is a great example of Kern County's giving spirit and United Way is pleased to be part of it," said Della Hodson, director of community impact at United Way of Kern County. "We want to express our sincere thanks to the Bakersfield Condors and their fans for making this year's event such a success. The stuffed animals have been distributed to nonprofit organizations throughout Kern County, where they will brighten thousands of children's lives."
The spirit of giving continues this Wednesday when the Condors battle the Johnstown Chiefs as KGET-TV 17, News Radio 970 KGET, and Barber Honda host the Project Warm Families Coat Collection. Donate a new or slightly used coat and receive $1.00 terrace admission to the game. Last season, a team high 2,860 coats were collected, bringing the event's history close to 12,000. The coats will be donated to needy families through Junior Achievement. The Stanley Cup will be on display in the arena that night as part of the NHL/ECHL Hurricane Relief Tour. Fans can have their picture taken with the Cup on the main concourse during the game. Donations will be accepted and proceeds will go to relief funds for those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
