Portland Smashes Three Homers in Loss

Portland, Maine- Junichi Tazawa allowed six runs and was unable to get out of the first inning as New Britain exploded for eight runs in the first. The Rock Cats would go on to pound the Portland Sea Dogs 15-5 Monday night at Hadlock Field.
The Rock Cats collected 18 hits off Portland pitchers including a 4-for-5 performance by Brian Dozier. Every Rock Cat who started had at least one hit.
Tazawa returned to Hadlock Field for the first time since he made his professional debut in 2009. In 2009 Tazawa was named an Eastern League All-Star and progressed all the way to the major leagues. The Japanese righty is recovering from Tommy John surgery, he was reinstated from the disabled list on Monday and optioned to Double-A Portland, where he started for the Sea Dogs.
Tazawa (0-1) would be unable to get out of the first inning, surrendering six runs on three hits in two thirds of an inning. Tazawa walked two and hit a batter. Tazawa tossed 38 pitches, 21 for strikes. Chris Hermann led off with a walk and scored on a Dozier RBI triple. Dozier scored on a Tazawa wild pitch as the Rock Cats took a 2-0 lead. After walking Chris Parmelee, he struck out Evan Bigley and got Yangervis Solarte to fly out. Tazawa hit Nate Hanson and Mike Hollimon ripped a two run double extending the Rock Cat lead to 4-0. Deibinson Romero chipped-in with a RBI single, ending Tazawa's night.
Miguel Gonzalez would relieve Tazawa and was greeted by a Mark Dolenc single which led to a two run triple off the bat off Hermann. Dozier would add his second RBI of the inning with a single to complete the eight run onslaught. New Britain would strike for three more runs off Gonzalez in the second, including a Hanson RBI single and a Deibinson Romero two run double. Gonzalez lasted 2.1 innings allowing five runs on ten hits.
Steve Hirschfeld (5-4) held the Sea Dogs offense to two runs on seven hits in six innings of work to earn the win.
The Sea Dogs blasted three home runs in the loss, solo shots by Chih-Hsien Chiang, his 13th in the second, and Federowicz his sixth in the eighth. Ryan Khoury added a two run homer, his first of the year in the ninth.
Jeremy Kehrt would prove to be Portland's most effective pitcher tossing six innings of relief allowing four runs (three) earned on five hits.
Tonight's paid attendance was 4,285. The Sea Dogs are now 16,687 fans away from welcoming the seven-millionth fan in franchise history.
The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats will play a doubleheader on Tuesday night with a 6:00 PM start. The Sea Dogs will send righty Alex Wilson (6-4, 2.92) to the mound in game one. New Britain will counter with righty Liam Hendriks (7-2, 2.81). Game two will feature righty Chris Balcom-Miller (1-3, 3.80) for Portland against lefty Blake Martin (1-1, 12.96). Breakin' BBoy McCoy will make his only appearance of the season at Hadlock Field Tuesday night.
