Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 20th through June 26th:

Richmond Flying Squirrels third baseman Chris Dominguez has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 20th-June 26th. The 6'3", 215 lb. slugger batted .458 (11-for-24) with seven doubles, one triple, one home run, eight RBI, four runs scored and a .958 slugging percentage over six games while leading Richmond to a 5-1 record during the week. Dominguez, who is a native of Los Angeles, California, had at least one extra base hit in every game he played in during the week and drove in or scored at least one run in all but one of the games. The 24-year old led all Eastern League players in doubles (7), RBI (8), slugging percentage (.958), OPS (1.398), extra-base hits (9) and total bases (23) last week. He also tied for first in hits (11) and was ranked third in batting average (.458). Chris, who was promoted to Richmond on June 16th after hitting .291 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI and 40 runs scored in 63 games with the San Jose Giants of the Class-A California League, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of the 2009 draft after batting .345 with 25 homers, 82 RBI and 19 stolen bases and being named the Big East Player of the Year during his junior season at University of Louisville.

Henderson Alvarez, a right-handed starting pitcher for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 20th-June 26th. The 21-year old made one appearance for the Fisher Cats last week and had a record of 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 7.0 innings pitched. Alvarez, who is a native of Valencia, Venezuela, made his only start of the week on Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium and pitched seven shutout innings in a 1-0 win against Altoona. He surrendered just two hits and one walk while striking out five batters to earn the victory. The 6'1", 195 lb. hurler led all Eastern League players with a 0.43 WHIP last week and also tied for first in ERA (0.00) and ranked third in batting average against (.091). Alvarez has made seven starts for the Fisher Cats since receiving a promotion from Class-A Dunedin on May 19th and has posted a record of 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched while allowing one earned run or less in five of those seven appearances. Henderson, who was named to the Florida State League All-Star Game and also appeared in the MLB XM Futures Game last season with the Dunedin Blue Jays, was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as a non-drafted free agent on August 17, 2006.
