(Trenton, NJ) - Behind seven impressive innings from Craig Heyer, the Trenton Thunder (44-32) won 6-4 over the first place New Hampshire Fisher Cats (46-28) on Monday night at Waterfront Park. Heyer surrendered just two runs in his seven frames, retiring the last 17 of 19 Fisher Cat hitters that he faced. Trenton scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a lead that they would never surrender in game one of the three game-set at Waterfront Park.
In a 2-1 ballgame in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Thunder would finally get to New Hampshire starter Henderson Alvarez, batting around to bring in five runs. After Bradley Suttle and Rob Lyerly singled to lead off the frame, Damon Sublett brought a run home with his one-out bloop single to left field. After Trenton tied the score 2-2, DeAngelo Mack doubled in two runs on a liner into right-center field, and the Thunder took a 4-2 lead. After another run came home on a wild pitch, Austin Romine doubled to bring in one last run and the Thunder led the game 6-2.
Heyer's impressive outing gave him his seventh win of the 2011 campaign, which is good for the Thunder team lead. Chase Whitley, in his Double A debut, allowed two runs in the final two frames to give the Thunder their fourth straight victory over New Hampshire.
On Tuesday night at 7:05 PM at Waterfront Park, the Thunder will face the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in game two of a three-game series. Trenton will send LHP Manny Banuelos (3-1, 3.50) to the Waterfront Park mound, while New Hampshire will counter with Major League right-hander Jesse Litsch (0-0, 0.00), who is making his second Major League rehab assignment with the Fisher Cats. Tune into the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM.
After a Super Value Tuesday that will feature a Thunder Poster Giveaway to the first 2,000 fans thanks White Eagle Printing, the Thunder will welcome Phil Hughes back to the Waterfront Park mound on Wednesday for his second Major League rehab assignment with the team in 2011. Wednesday's game is at 12:05 PM and will serve as the series finale with New Hampshire. For ticket information, call the Thunder ticket office at 609-394-3300 or log on to trentonthunder.com.
