Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
ERIE, PA - Binghamton managed just four hits and narrowly avoided being shutout thanks to a Salomon Manriquez ninth-inning homer in a 7-1 loss to Erie at Jerry Uht Park Monday night. SeaWolves' starter Casey Crosby carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Josh Satin broke it up with a two-out single.
Erie (37-38) came out guns blazing in the first inning against Brandon Moore. Francisco Martinez clubbed a triple to right with two outs to begin the rally. Deik Scram followed and plated him with an RBI double to right, which put the SeaWolves on top for good. Rawley Bishop came next and hit a slow ground ball to third. Satin charged to field it, but threw wild to first, allowing Bishop to reach. Satin's error loomed large as Michael Bertram and Justin Henry came through with RBI singles to up the lead to 3-0.
The SeaWolves kept their foot on the accelerator in the second. Brandon Douglas singled off Moore to start the frame. Jamie Johnson joined him on base with a walk. Then, Gustavo Nunez singled on a hit-and-run with a slow roller to right, which plated Douglas. Moore got Martinez to pop out to second for the first out, but Scram did not go quietly. The Erie rightfielder smashed a three-run home run over the right-field wall on a payoff pitch to extend the lead to seven.
Moore exited to the loss after three innings. He allowed seven runs - five earned - on nine hits to take his sixth loss. In contrast, Crosby worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings and limited the B-Mets to just one hit and three walks with six strikeouts.
Luis Marte followed the starter and fired 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief with five strikeouts to carry the game into the ninth.
Binghamton (27-47) dodged the shutout in the ninth. Jared Gayhart entered from the bullpen and struck out Allan Dykstra to start the frame. However, Manriquez tattooed a first-pitch fastball from the right-hander, sending it out of the ballpark to left for his fourth homer. Gayhart struck out the next two hitters to end the game.
Josh Stinson tossed two, perfect innings of relief following Moore and Michael Powers finished the game out with three, scoreless innings of his own.
Manriquez accounted for half of the B-Mets four hits. He went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. The SeaWolves pounded out 11 hits en route to the win. Scram led the way with a 2-for-4 showing including four RBI.
Binghamton continues its four-game set with Erie Tuesday at 6:05 PM with a doubleheader. LHP Robert Carson (2-7, 4.21) will start the first game for the B-Mets opposite LHP Jay Voss (3-2, 3.79). Binghamton has yet to name its game two starter, but the SeaWolves will send LHP Ramon Garcia (2-3, 5.93) to the mound. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 5:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
