Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - Chris Dominguez belted the first grand slam in franchise history and drove in six runs as the Richmond Flying Squirrels (40-35) defeated the Harrisburg Senators (43-31), 9-3, on Monday night at The Diamond. Richmond won their fourth consecutive contest, their longest win-streak of the season.

The Squirrels picked up where they left off on Sunday afternoon in the first inning. The Squirrels recorded four consecutive hits to start the inning against Harrisburg starter Tanner Roark. Francisco Peguero got the Squirrels started with a lead-off single. With Peguero running, Charlie Culberson sent a clean-single through the left-side of the infield to put runners at the corners. Roger Kieschnick then laced the first pitch from Roark into left-center field to give Richmond the lead, 1-0. Dominguez then poked a two-run double into the right-field corner, scoring both Culberson and Kieschnick for a 3-0 advantage. A batter later, Johnny Monell plated Dominguez with a single for a 4-0 lead.

Richmond right-hander Henry Sosa subdued the Senators for the first three innings, but they were able to break through in the fourth. Derek Norris and Tim Pahuta supplied back-to-back singles to start the inning, leaving runners at the corners with nobody out. Chris McConnell sent a ground ball to the shortstop Nick Noonan, resulting in a force-out of Pahuta at second base. Norris scored on the play to trim the Richmond advantage to three runs, 4-1.

Roark had settled in to retire eight consecutive Squirrels before Monell opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a single. Two batters later, Sosa aided his own cause with a single back through the middle, scoring Monell to return the lead to four runs.

Roark (4-4) retired to the defeat over five innings, having conceded five earned runs on eight hits. He walked none and struck out five as he fell to 0-3 in three starts against the Squirrels.

Harrisburg pulled back into the ballgame and finally chased Sosa in the seventh inning. Josh Johnson opened the inning with a single, before Sosa recovered to strike out Chris Rahl. Bill Rhinehart doubled to put two in scoring position and Tyler Moore made it a two-run ballgame with an RBI single off the wall in left field.

Sosa was lifted following Moore's single, but left-hander Alex Hinshaw entered and cleaned up the inning for him. Sosa (4-0) scattered 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings, but limited the Senators to three earned runs for his fourth consecutive victory.

Richmond erased all doubt as Dominguez made history in the bottom of the seventh. Aaron Lowenstein, Peguero and Culberson all singled to load the bases. Kieschnuck struck out, but Dominguez stepped in and crushed the first grand slam in franchise history, a majestic-drive to left field. His second blast in 11 games with Richmond extended the Squirrels lead to 9-3. Dominguez established a new career-high with six RBIs, which also tied the franchise record established in August of 2010 by Sharlon Schoop.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM at The Diamond on Tuesday night. RHP Justin Fitzgerald (6-4, 3.59) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Erik Davis (4-2, 3.59) for the Senators. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 PM, and can be heard on Sports Radio 910 and SportsRadio910.com.
