Crawdads Drop Series Opener to Intimidators

HICKORY, NC - After getting out to an early 2-0 lead, the Hickory Crawdads were held scoreless through the final eight frames by the Kannapolis Intimidators, falling, 8-2, before 1,388 fans at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Crawdads (66-53, 26-23) wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning against Kannapolis starter RHP Andre Rienzo (6-4, 4.23 ERA). With the bases loaded and just one out, C Zach Zaneski smacked a two-run single up the middle to score DH Travis Adair and SS Leury Garcia and put Hickory up, 2-0.

The Intimidators (55-64, 24-26) answered right back in the bottom of the first with three runs off 'Dads starter RHP Braden Tullis (6-1, 3.93 ERA). DH Brady Shoemaker got the scoring started with an RBI double to right-center field, scoring SS Tyler Saladino from first. 1B Ian Gac then followed with a two-run home run to left field to put Kannapolis on top, 3-2.

Kannapolis didn't stop scoring from there, adding single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings before adding two more in the bottom of the seventh to extend its advantage over Hickory to the eventual final score of 8-2. Shoemaker and Gac led the Intimidators offensive attack, combining to go 4-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Tullis picked up the loss, surrendering six runs on 11 hits while fanning two in five innings. RHP Sam Brown followed with two innings on the mound, allowing a pair of runs (one earned), before RHP Kyle Ocampo dealt a perfect bottom of the eighth. Rienzo got the win for Kannapolis, relinquishing just the two early runs on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts through six innings. Relievers RHP Ryan Kussmaul and RHP Taylor Thompson each threw a scoreless frame to close out the Intimidators victory.
