Portland Sea Dogs News Release
New Britain, CT - Portland jumped on starter Jeff Manship out of the gate and went on to down the Rock Cats, 9-5 in the final game of a five-game series.
Portland took advantage of a shaky first inning by Manship (1-4, 5.06) to take an early lead. Manship retired the first batter he faced before he walked the next two batters. Aaron Bates then delivered an RBI single that put Portland on the board, 1-0. Zachary Daeges then laced a ground-rule double down the left-field line that scored Jeff Corsaletti. John Otness followed with a two-run double. Otness scored on Sandy Madera's single to give the Sea Dogs a 5-0 advantage.
Brian Dinkelman put the Rock Cats on the board in the third inning with a solo home run - his first career Double A homer - to right field. Portland's Mickey Hall answered back with a solo blast of his own in the top of the fourth to extend the Sea Dogs' lead to 6-1.
The Rock Cats' bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth. Erik Lis started things off by reaching on a leadoff walk. Brock Peterson followed with a double to center field. Felix Molina grounded out to second base, but Lis scored on the play. With Peterson on third, Toby Gardenhire placed a perfectly placed bunt down the first base line to score Peterson on a suicide squeeze. The Rock Cats receieved back-to-back singles by Rodolfo Palacios and Dustin Martin before Dinkelman laced a single to left field that scored Palacios and closed the gap, 6-4.
Sea Dogs starter Dave Gassner surrendered four runs and seven hits through four innings, but didn't pitch long enough to qualify for the victory. Michael James (3-3, 4.33) picked up the win in relief with one run and three hits in two innings.
Manship was knocked out after four innings having allowed six runs on six hits. He walked four while striking out two. Portland struck for three more runs on three hits off reliever Ryan Mullins in the fifth and sixth inning, including a two-run homer by Otness in the fifth. For the Rock Cats, Dinkelman finished the game with three hits and two RBI.
