GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland A's, have announced that infielder Nino Leyja has joined the Cougars from Short-A Vancouver and catcher Juan Nunez has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to July 6, with a knee injury. The active roster remains at 25 players in accordance with Midwest League rules as the team opens a six-game homestand beginning this evening at 6:30 p.m. against the Burlington Bees.

Leyja (15th Rd, 2008), who is 18 years old, becomes the youngest Cougar since another 18-year old, Matt Sulentic, joined the Cougars near the end of the 2006 season. As a 17-year old in his first professional season last summer, Leyja hit safely in 31 of 43 games for the Rookie League A's as an everyday infielder. Entering the '09 season, Leyja was rated the 30th best prospect in the A's system according by Scout.com, and led his high school (Houston Christian) to a state title.

Nunez moves to the disabled list after playing in 39 games, batting .240 with 1 home run and 10 RBI. Petey Paramore remains the Cougars' primary catcher with Dusty Napoleon available for backstop duties as well.
