July 8, 2009 - The Fort Wayne Tincaps rolled into Cedar Rapids and snapped the Cedar Rapids Kernels eight game winning streak, 5-3, on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Tincap starter Erik Davis (8-3) held the Kernels to three runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out four over 5.2 innings.
Kernels starter Manuel Flores (4-4) allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out four over five innings in taking the loss. Tyson Auer was 2-3 with a run scored as Roberto Lopez, Gabe Jacobo and Matt Crawford each added an RBI. Angel Castillo was 1-3 with a triple and Darwin Perez was 1-3 with a double and run scored.
Kevin Hansen led the Tincap offense, going 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Justin Baum hit a two run HR in the fifth and Jaff Decker added an RBI. Reliever Brad Brach struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 21st save.
Game two of this three game series between the Kernels and Tincaps is Thursday night. Gates open at 5:30 pm and first pitch is set for 6:35 pm.
