Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - Looking to build on a modest two-game winning streak, the Peoria Chiefs ran into a brick wall Wednesday night faltering 12-3 to the Great Lakes Loons at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs at one point had a 2-1 lead, but surrendered that short-lived lead in the third before allowing the Loons to run away with the contest in an eight-run fifth.

The Loons and the Chiefs traded blows in the first. Dee Gordon, now second in the league behind the recently promoted Josh Harrison in hits, singled to start the ballgame. With Jaime Pedroza at the plate, Gordon showcased his blazing speed moving up two bases on the same wild pitch. Another wild pitch followed in the same at-bat allowing Gordon to score and give the Loons a 1-0 lead.

The Chiefs came back with two in their half of the first. David Macias and Ryan Flaherty both singled to start the frame with Macias reaching third on the play and Flaherty scooting into second base on the throw to third. Rebel Ridling, second in the MWL with 56 RBIs coming in, picked up RBI 57 on a run-scoring groundout to short scoring Macias. After a Kyler Burke ground out advancing Flaherty to third, the newest Chiefs acquisition Jovan Rosa delivered an infield single to plate Flaherty and give the Chiefs a 2-1 edge.

Great Lakes regained a one-run lead in the third. Gordon laid down a bunt single to get things going. Later in the inning with two down, the league leader in home runs Kyle Russell stepped up. This time however, Russell had to settle for a triple off the wall in center to plate Gordon from third. Alfredo Silverio followed with a bouncing ball single up the middle to score Russell and give the Loons a 3-2 lead.

However, Russell apparently wasn't content with the RBI triple in the third. Ryan Buchter came on in relief for starter Jeff Beliveau and inherited two runners with nobody out in the top of the fifth. Russell stepped up against the latest Chiefs southpaw and ripped an opposite field, three-run home run to left, his 20th of the season to give Great Lakes a 6-2 advantage.

The Loons weren't done in that fifth inning. Buchter walked Gordon with the bases loaded to force in a run and was lifted for Chris Siegfried who became the third pitcher of the inning. After a long battle between Siegfried and Pedroza, the Loons second baseman blasted a grand slam over the berm in left field to make it an 11-2 score. The Loons sent 11 to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring eight times. Each team added one more run during the remainder of the ballgame. The Loons scored a solo tally in the top of the sixth and Rosa bounced a single up the middle to plate Ridling from second for his second RBI of the ballgame to make it 12-3.

Beliveau (3-3) suffered the loss, firing four-plus innings and allowing five runs on six hits while striking out five. Buchter gave up five runs, but just one earned in two thirds of an inning out of the bullpen. Siegfried went 3 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits, and Chris Huseby hurled the final 1 1/3 innings and was the only Chiefs pitcher to not allow a run.
