Manuel Becomes 33rd Former Dragon to Reach Majors

Dayton, Ohio-Former Dayton Dragons pitcher Robert Manuel was promoted to the Major Leagues today by the Cincinnati Reds. Manuel pitched for the Dragons in 2006 and becomes the 33rd former Dragons player to reach the big leagues.

Manuel has spent the first three months of the 2009 season with the Reds Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats. Manuel made 32 appearances for the Bats, all in relief, and went 3-2 with eight saves and a 2.51 earned run average (43 IP, 33 H, 9 BB, 36 SO).

Manuel pitched as both a starter and reliever for the Dragons in 2006, logging 48 innings. He went 0-3 with a 4.31 earned run average with Dayton.

Manuel enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2008 when he was selected as the best relief pitcher in the minor leagues by MiLB.com. He spent most of 2008 at the Double-A level with Chattanooga but also pitched briefly with both Sarasota and Louisville, going 6-3 with a 1.25 ERA.

The Dragons play at Clinton tonight at 8:00 p.m. (EDT). The next home game at Fifth Third Field is Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00 p.m. vs. the Quad Cities River Bandits.
