Cedar Rapids, IA - The Fort Wayne TinCaps won a battle of division leaders over the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-3, Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RHP Erik Davis won his third straight start and Justin Baum hammered a two-run homer. Catcher Griffin Benedict threw four runners out on the bases against one of the best running teams in the league.

Fort Wayne took the lead in the 3rd inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Jaff Decker lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Dean Anna for the first run of the game. In the 4th, Kevin Hansen yanked an RBI double down the left-field line which allowed Cole Figueroa to come around to score and make it 2-0.

Blake Tekotte ripped a leadoff triple in the 5th and was stranded there until Baum delivered a two-run homer to left to push the lead to 4-0. Yefri Carvajal then reached on a swinging third strike and a wild pitch. He went to third on Figueroa's double and scored on Hansen's single to right, making it a 5-0 game.

The Kernels got on the board in the 6th. Roberto Lopez hit an RBI groundout. Later in the inning, Gabe Jacobo hit an RBI single to left and Matt Crawford followed with a two-out RBI double to cut the lead to 5-3. Fort Wayne relievers Eduardo Perez and Brad Brach combined to close the door in the final three innings. Brach struck out the side in the 9th to nail down his 21st save.

Davis (8-3) snagged the win, allowing three runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings. Cedar Rapids LHP Manuel Flores (4-4) was saddled with the loss as he was tagged with five runs in five innings.

The TinCaps, winners of eight in a row, upped their record to 57-26 overall, 12-1 in the second half. The Kernels saw their eight-game streak snapped as they fell to 50-33, 10-3 in the half.

Fort Wayne continues its three-game set against the Kernels (Class-A Los Angeles Angels) Thursday at 7:35pm Eastern time. TinCaps RHP Anthony Bass (8-3) goes against Cedar Rapids RHP Tyler Chatwood (3-4).
