GENEVA, Ill. - After tossing no shutouts in their first 62 games of the season, the Kane County Cougars have now posted five in their last 21 games, including two in a row. They shut out the Burlington Bees, 2-0, Wednesday night in front of 5,260 fans in the opener of a three-game series and six-game homestand at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars have won four straight games and are a season-high 15 games above .500 over at 49-34.

Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier (1-2) posted seven innings of three-hit ball for his first Cougars victory. He walked one and fanned five in his first quality start, retiring the final 10 batters he faced. Jamie Richmond handled the eighth, and Justin Murray notched his fifth save by finishing the ninth.

The Cougars took command of the game in the fourth against Manauris Baez (3-4) when Steve Parker's fielder's choice scored Leonardo Gil. Then in the eighth versus James Thompson, Gil singled in Chris Berroa to make it 2-0, and that became the final.

The Cougars (8-5, 49-34) and Bees (5-7, 34-48) continue the series Thursday night at 6:30 CDT. Shawn Haviland (6-4, 3.89) will face Mike Montgomery (1-2, 1.88).
